Help capturing video to .AVI

Postby jamesreid » 11 Jul 2009 04:03

Hi Everyone,

Sorry if this question seems a bit simple... I've done a reasonable amount of playing with VLC 1.0.0 and searches and can't quite find something that works...

I'm trying to record video + audio from an AVerMedia USB capture device to an AVI file.

I *think* AVI is what I want I'm looking for as it is the only(?) format that works "out-of-the-box" (ie does not require extra codecs etc to be installed) with both Microsoft Media Player and Apple Quicktime (my customers use both Macs and PCs, and are very "simple" IT users - ie installing special software or extra codecs is asking too much!)

I've figured out that I need to go to Media -> Convert / Save... -> Capture Device tab -> Select my AVerMedia device -> Convert / Save button -> Give the file a name (which I believe needs to have .AVI included on the end, but it's not quite obvious!) and then select a Profile.

I *think* I need to create a custom profile (the default ones don't seem to work with Windows Media Player?), but am not quite sure what permutation to use - could someone please give some suggestions?

I'm also conscious that what I'm trying to capture is a one hour talk where someone is standing at a lectern speaking - ie should compress very well, and audio bandwidth does not need to be large - my understanding is that some codec should compress this sort of environment better than others?

Thanks for your help!
James.

Very good Q & I'm looking for the same info. Although the question itself was informative, thank you.

Couldn't find anything more on the FAQ or the Wiki. I'm surprised because it seems like a fairly common function.

Me as well - although my output preference is asf. If I could do this using a command line, that would be ideal. I'm using XP SP3.
thanks!
Sue
