how to disable subtitles by default but keep them available?

Postby lococola » 18 Jul 2009 03:26

Switched to VLC 1.0 recently. I have some hd mkv files that contain built-in subtitles. In VLC 0.86i these files play with subtitles disabled by default. It's still possible to select the subs manually tho. So this is good.

However, in VLC 1.0 the first subtitle track is now enabled by default. This means that every time I run a video I have to right click, go to Video -> Subtitles Track and set it to Disabled. Very annoying if you have to do this with 99,9% of the videos you're watching. Is there a way to set it so that the subtitle track is disabled by default?

Note : I already went to the Preferences and unchecked the "Enable sub-pictures" box, but this completely disables all subtitles. So they won't show even if I manually select them. I do want to keep the subs available, just not enabled by default. Anyone else run into this issue? :?

Tools -> Preferences... (Show settings: All) Input/Codecs and there are Subtitles track and Subtitles track ID options which should allow you to disable the default subtitle.

Setting the Subtitles Track ID to 0 did the trick. Perfect!

Thanks very much! :)

I have this same problem, however in Tools -> Preferences -> All -> Audio Codecs -> Subtitles I can't see any option for Subtitles Track or Subtitles Track ID options.

VLC 1.1.10

Very annoying to have to manually disable subtitles every time I play a video.

What? The place is Tools -> Preferences... (Show settings: All) Input/Codecs, nothing to do with audio codecs.

ok so I typed it wrong, or it changed in 1.1.11 (which I just upgraded to so can't check if what I wrote was a typo)

Anyway, in 1.1.11 now,

Tools -> Preferences -> All -> Input/Codecs -> then where?

I can't see an option to disable subtitles.

Sweet! Been trying to find this fix for a long time. Just wanted to say thanks. With this and my new found ability to have VLC automatically choose the english track in multi-audio files, I'm in anime heavan!!

Now, if I could only figure out how to get VLC to cut out the cheesy opening and ending credits I'd be set. ;)

I can't see an option to disable subtitles.
There isn't direct option for that. There is a Subtitles track ID field, set it to 0.

I know, but where is the Subtitles track ID option because I can't find it.

I am looking in:
Tools -> Preferences -> (click All) -> Input / Codecs -> Subtitle codecs -> ... (not in there anywhere)
Tools -> Preferences -> (click All) -> Input / Codecs -> Video Codecs -> ... (not in there anywhere)
Tools -> Preferences -> (click All) -> Input / Codecs -> Audio Codecs -> ... (not in there anywhere)

and I have just realised that is where my problem / confusion is. I need to click on Input / Codecs itself, rather than expand it.

Found it now. Thanks
