Fixing Sharpen algorithm?

Postby Excalibur » 13 Sep 2009 00:26

I posted simmilar thread about sharpening issue.

I tested a lot of my movies, including DVD's, homemade and etc. and sharpening effect has serious problems.
Half of those movies suffer from some sort of aura/ghost effect, and some strange line at the bottom of the video that is blinking. So can you fix that issue?

Edit:

I purcashed Gravion, an Anime cartoon. And this is the effect caused by sharpening (look at the letters ghosting, and the line below the moon):

You mean Tools -> Preferences... (Show settings: All) Video -> Filters -> Sharpen video?

Yes. Actually it is called: Tools -> Preferences... (Show settings: All) Video -> Filters -> Augument contrast between contours.
In Extended settings of VLC player it is in Video Effects -> Sharpen (Sigma slider)

So ghosting is there even if you adjust the value?

Yes. There is no ghosting when slider is only on 0.

I hope this thread isn't considered too old for updates. I got the same ghosting problem on some AVI files using Sharpen filter on VLC 1.1.0.

My PC setup:

Athlon 64 X2 5000+
2 GB RAM
Asus EAH3450 256 MB with the latest ATI Catalyst driver installed
Windows Vista Business 32 bit SP2

Here's some more codec-specific info:

File extension: AVI
Codec: MPEG-4 Video (XVID)
Resolution: 720x304
Frame rate: 23.975985
Ghosting: YES (very noticeable even with sharpening set at 0.05)

File extension: AVI
