Live streaming to iPhone

Postby skeller47 » 14 Sep 2009 15:57

Hey,

Recently I used VLC to encode a live video feed and then I used Wowza Media Server 2 Preview 6 to serve the video to an iPhone. The minimum delay I was able to achieve with this setup was about 11 seconds.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a product that supports streaming live video to an iPhone with less that a 6 second delay.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I dont believe you will find a way to bring that down too much.

The issue is not with VLC or WOWZA, but with how the iPhones handle HTTP streaming. They must first "buffer in" "x" amount of stream before playback. If your segmenting is set at 10 seconds, then you will find most likely the iPhone will buffer in at least the first TS chunck of 10 seconds.

You could try reducing the chunk timeframe down to 5 seconds, that would in essence tell the iPhone it needs new chunks every 5 seconds, and since it pre-fetches so long as the user has the available bandwidth and your server is able to kick it out fast enough, you may be able to achieve close to what your looking for.
