Thai subtitle

Hi,
I know, an old story, but since month still unsolved.
Thai subtitle, ssa file shows wrong charcterset, shows ansi, not Thai windows 874 as its shown at the options.
Same problem with windows media player9. But, the smplayer for mkv files works correct.
Sure, it is NOT a font problem.
Any idea?

I just saved the subtitle example (in Unicode format) you gave and it worked. I haven't changed any options.
EDIT:
You can also use Alt+Print Screen to capture current window. And JPEG is OK in here.

Hi...am new to this forum and site...please help or point me in the right direction

I am running VLC on OS 10.5.8 (same problem occurs on Quicktime)

I am familiar with Subtitle .ssa and .srt files and can run them fine. However, whenever I download a Thai subtitle file and play it, I do not get Thai letters...I get strange characters. If I look at the file through the Mac text editor, the english file is fine but the Thai subtitle file has these same strange characters that show during movie playback

For example, James Bond Quantum of Solace .ssa sub file looks like this

I have the same issue. I run on Vista and I never have a problem with .srt subs, but when ever I try the .ssa subs I get the wrong character set. I noticed "saved in unicode" mentioned earlier. When I open the .ssa file in notepad, I get the crazy characters, and not the Thai. Do I need to install a different Thai set into my languages. I have many videos which have Thai subs available, and would like to be able to watch them with my girlfriend who's english is only about 80%. Thanks for you help with this. Love the player, never fails me.... only slightly confuses me with this matter.

Have since gone back and saved the file in Unicode, retried in VLC and still have the strange characters...

Wigboy...looks like we have the exact same problem. I too would like to watch more downloaded movies with Thai subtitles with my Thai girlfriend.

VLC_Help...I posted this on both the MAC and Windows forums because the problem occurs on both and the title of this thread was "Thai Subtitles". I don't think the problem is platform specific. I too have no problems with .srt files in Thai...only .ssa files. Yes, I can...and am sure Wigboy can...see Thai characters on my browser fine...and in other apps both on windows and on MAC. This site, for example, is about 95% Thai which is why I specifically asked for help in english.

There must be some way of converting these symbols in to proper Thai Characters for .ssa files. I am suprised nobody else is having this problem.

Any suggestions?

Sorry, I was referring to the site that is my main source for Thai Subititles (http://thaisubtitle.com/) which is mostly in the Thai language and completely readable on my browser. The reference to "...help in English" was my request for help on this topic on that site...which so far has not yielded any answers.

Yes I can see Thai script on Thai web pages just fine, and like I mentioned, as long as I am using a .srt or .sub file, I can see Thai script. My only problem is I can not find many subs in these formats. The site with the most files has them in .ssa format.

I did take one of these, and saved a copy of the file in Unicode. Tried the file out and had the same result. When I open either of the two verions, I don't see Thai. I see the same characters as displayed in one of the previous posts.

I am only using the preinstalled languages that came with my laptop. It is only 1.5yrs old, so I would imagine they are relatively up-to-date.

Yeah, but my girlfiend is Lao. I don't think there's a hope in hell of finding Lao subs! Haha... besides most Lao speak and read Thai anyway, Are you in Thailand? I am in Savannakhet, Laos.

I have a bunch of Thai movies, some of which have english subs. I can send you a link if you are interested.

But this was just the most recent example. All .saa files seem to do the same thing. It is the same site "gegs" gets his file from. I believe you tried with his "Quantum of Solace" file and didn't have the same problem. Anyway, let me know how it goes!

Wigboy...yes, I live in Bangkok...and enjoy it very much. Please send me the link to the Thai films with English subtitles either here or my email gegs@msn.com...much appreciated. I am not such a fan of Thai movies as most are horror but it will be a good comprimise on occasion . There are many Thai/Lao border women here...just beautiful!!!

Those subtitles aren't saved as Unicode. So they won't work out of box. Only option is to convert those to Unicode because AFAIK you cannot change default charset of libass from VLC.
