VLC can't play video without big stutters, but QT Player can

Postby Wizardling » 26 Aug 2009 14:13

G'day.

On a series of three Mid-2007 24" 2.8GHz iMacs VLC has never been able to play video without periodic huge stutters unrelated to CPU usage (I'm keeping an eye on CPU usage history. However QT Player works fine. The reason I don't use QT Player is because it has always suffered from an annoying bug Apple is utterly clueless off and never fixes despite numerous bug reports that un-hides the dock randomly during fullscreen video playback.

I'm so sick of having to boot into Windows just to watch video without a hitch (yes - sometimes I can't stand it and occasionally do this). Is there ANY video player nowadays on the Mac that will play video flawlessly? Gods... I could play video ok on my old G3 iMac., and the PPC desktop before that. It baffles me that OSX is so crap at this. I'm just sick of it. Three iMacs, multiple clean installs and nothing ever gets any better.

But before this just becomes a rant - any idea why QT player can play video without stuttering (video and audio just stop several seconds, then audio returns with a pixelated picture that takes a few seconds to resolve again) yet VLC can't? I actually like VLC's controls better so if VLC can be made to work I'd rather go with it. I doubt Apple will ever stop the Dock from reappearing in QT Player :-(
