vlc cannot play radio streams via 3G broadband

I'm trying to hear internet radio. With wired ethernet or Wi-Fi, all works fine. When using a 3G-Broadband device,
only a marginal number (3 of about 25) of the radio stations do work. Rhythmbox does play all the radio streams.
Details: VLC 1.0.1 as distributed with Fedora 11, Thinkpad T40 (2GB RAM), Vodafone(?) MC950D USB stick,
USB earphones (Fedora 11 has an actual issue with the build-in sound card). Thank you!
