vlc 1.0.1 wont play dvd on dell inspiron 640m

dell inspiron 640m, intel core duo 1.6, 1gb ram, dvd-r/rw drive, windows XP, fully patched.
latest 945 video driver from the dell support site.
latest audio driver from dell support site

I just installed VLC 1.0.1 and am trying to play a DVD to test the install (Oh Brother, Where Art Thou).

I get either no video, or blocks of random color with the occasional flash of a partial frame, and bits and pieces of intermittent sound (not enough to be intelligible)

watch streaming video off the web all the time no problems with this comp, and sound and pic are fine.

help! I'd like to be able to watch DVDs on the plane....

update... now I have video, but choppy audio, like it's making every sound 3 or 4 times, and only playing little bits of it...

Hello I'm Running a Dell Latitude D620 Intel(r) Core 2 CPU T5500 @1.66GHz, 3.24 GB RAM. OS: Windows XP Home Edition ver 2002 SP3. I am having the same issue. I recently had power DVD crap out and stop playing DVDs so I downloaded VLC 1.0.1 Goldeneye onto both my desk top and the above laptop. The DVDs play fine on my desktop however the sound is choppy and reverberated on the laptop as described in the previous posts. Any one have an idea to correct it?

Make sure you have windows media player 11 installed. If not install it and try a dvd again.

similar problem. DVD opens but all i get is a few random pixels and very choppy audio.
