i have vlcplayver v1.0 on 2 pcs, both running windows xp & both with a similar collection of other palyers & codes - WMP, Quictime, Zoom player, Powerdvd, ffdshow, 3ivx...
on one of the PCs, none of my .m4a & .m4b files are workign. the codec & file length info looks ok - all the slider controsl work, but there is no audio . I can lsiten to theim in Zoom, WMp, Quicktine, but not in VLC!
But on my other pc the same files all work fine in VLC.
what should I be checking to figure this out / what can I do to fix this. I've tried toggling use system codecs - that makes no difference.

"change audio output module" cannot be the answer.
On both the owrking & non working installations that is set to "default."
but when I play an m4a file on the problem install & watch the stats I see that the file is being demuxed butr that audio blocks decoded stays at zero.
the coecs info page is the same on both PCs, when tested with same file on both.
On the other PC I see the number of audio blocks decoded steadily increasing as the file plays.
so the problem is at the audio decoder stage not out the output stage.

There isn't a single message in those logs saying anything about aout (audio output module), so have you tried different audio output module as suggested earlier? Do other media players play sound?

Yes and Yes - as previously stated these files work OK in WMP, zoom, quicktime.... and on my other PC with the same preferences settings they even work in VLC!. Please note also my previous description of what appears in the detailed codecs window as the files are playing - on the working PC I see the number of audio blocks decoded steadily increasing as the file plays - but on the problem PC it is stuck at zero - to my non-tech brain that indicates problem with audio decoder ???
Please see also a thread by a different poster titled "mp4 does not wotk in vlc 1.0" or something similar - I would suggest combining the two threads. He "solved" the problem by reverting to v0.96 - I no longer have that version of the installer so I can't test his solution.
MORE TESTS:
1. upgraded to v1.01 on both PCs - no change
2. compared file sizes & versions numbers of .DLL files in VIDEOLAN folder in program files - same on both PCs
3. looked again at all preferences settings - can't find any differences or anyway to tweak for .m4A playback
So help please - I'm stuck / out of ideas - one pC plays m4a, the other doesn't - still..

The QuickTime (and especially any potential QT for Win32 installation) module is not used for any useful purpose and is certainly not required to play AAC encoded audio files. These are supported in both VLC 1.0.0 and 1.0.1. It is not possible to create those files with the mentioned version, but playback is definitely working.

yes - already answered that twice!...Therefore, the problem is located somewhere else. Do you guys get any audio output from VLC?
please read the whole thread before jumping in.
to recap again:
I have two similar PCs - VLC audio for all file types works fine on one PC, but on the other PC the file types those which require M4A decode have no audio output in VLC ( yet work in other players). But they do play in VLC if the VLC command line option codec=faad is added.
so its an audio decoder problem which another poster says occured only after v0.96

Smells a lot like broken preferences on the PC with the non-working AAC output. You can reset both Preferences and Cache using an entry in your start menu. Does this solve the issue?

That is possible as I alwasy keep preferences when upgardingSmells a lot like broken preferences on the PC with the non-working AAC output. You can reset both Preferences and Cache using an entry in your start menu. Does this solve the issue?
I have not tried that solution yet because i spent ages customising hotkeys so that I could use VLC with a remote control- is there a way to save those & reset everything else, or is there a way to copy all preferences from the othe PC, which has the same hot key settings.
PS I looked in various places for a "cache" to delete manually but no obvious candidates. whre is it & what files should be removed please.

VLC's config file is C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\vlc\vlcrc

cancel the celebration - audio has gone a.w.o.l. again!
all I did was watched a few .avi files & tweaked a few preferences that had gone missing after I had reset cache & preferences & then copied over my preferences from my other install
a.f.a.i.k, , all that I tweaked were .avi preferences e.g. I was experimenting with interlace & post processing settings & removing slawasy on top so that start in full screen would work OK
then I tried one of the .m4b audio book files again & got silence. retried the exact same .m4a file that had worked after following the above instructions & that has also now gone silent.any ideas anyone ?
so another day another test sequence ( PC has been on standby since I wrote the previous paragraph):
I check that sound is still broken then I
1. back up my preferences file, reset VLCcache & preferences, restore my preferences file, test .m4a & .m4b - still no sound
2. reset cache & preferences again- but do not restore my preferences file - test the same files -sound is now OK again
so something I did to preferences in the last 24 hours has seemingly caused the bug to re-appear.
OK - now comes the illogical part - it's working so I try various tweaks to audio preferences (e.g. chanign default output to directX ) - to see if I can make the audio fail again.
- I'm careful to save preferences, close & restart player after every change.
- I can't break it, so I figure I'll restore the preferences file which I copied & saved in step 1 above , as that should break it.
- So I reset VLC, restore that preferences file & restest with M4B but this time sound is still OK
- This seems illogical.
So, in summary, as at now the sound is working & I can't break it, but it did break earlier & briefly seemed to be a reproducible error.
I wondered if it could be linked somehow to placing the PC in standby while VLC is active ( by pressing the standby button on the remote) so I tested doing that but sound still worked after coming out of standby
, so I think I'll quit while I'm winning, for now anyway.

I confirm that this fix worked for me.
My situation:
All audio worked with prior version of VLC (I think I was running 0.9.6, as there was multi monitor issues with subsequent versions)
I recently switched to 1.0.0 (apparently there is 1.0.1 already, which I haven't yet upgraded too)
At that time I started having no audio issues with a handful of formats on videos that worked fine in 0.9.6. I noticed it wasn't trying to decode any audio frames... they weren't dropped or decoding without hearing any audio... there was just 0 audio frames.
I copied my vlcrc file and then did the preference reset. The audio now worked in these videos.
I put the old vlcrc file back and the audio stopped working.
I reset preferences again and all works (at least as of today)

the fixes ( reset preferences, clear cache ) given so far do not work permanently.
once again I find that my "fixed" version of VLv1.01 - after using it for other videos for a few days - is again not playing the m4a, m4b sound, the exact same problwm which started the thread - dot decoding any audio frames.
So is it going to be properly fixed in a future release ?

this M4A bug is becoming really annoying.
ONce again i find myself wanting to watch a Hi-DEf movie with M4A encoded soundtrack & getting no sound.
so once again i go throuhg the steps of 1. backup vlcrc, 2. reset cache & preferences from start menu - 3. test & get sound back but lose all my hot key customisations in the process.
If i then 4. restore my backup of vlcrc - the sound vanishes again. I then (step 5.) reset cache & preferences again - sound returns
step 6. I laboriously redo all my hotkey personalisations - sound is still working - for now.
So - having proved that the bug is not caused by my choice of hot keys - how can I save them so as not to have to redo them every time that the cache needs resetting ???
or - to put it abother way - can I reset only the cache ?
it seems pretty clear that the problem is not with my preferred choice preferences, as there is nothing else significant that I would normally change in preferences - except to have start up in full screen, and maybe to have directx rendering so as to get wallpaper mode option. to have " never ask" for broken .avi and to have highest post processing levels. none of of those when applied individually cause the m4A sound to vanish, the sound just goes a.w.o.l ( ON THIS PC ONLY) only after a few days of "normal" usage - e.g. watching vanilla .AVi files.
AND/OR - TO FIX this another way - we established earlier in the thread that"start VLC with --codec=faad option" is a valid workaround, so is there any way to configure VLC to use that as a default i.e. so when I start a movie by doubling clicking on the movie file it will launch VLC with that option applied ? I think what's significant here how is this test
I restore my "broken" preferences again and create 2 desktop shotcuts for VLC - one is the standard shortcurt from start menu - the other has the -codec=faad addtion to its command line. calll them 1 & 2 for now.
Now if I launch VlC with shortcut 1 & drag+drop the movie I get no sound. Close it & repeat with shoretcurt 2 & I get sound OK. I can go back and forth between the 2 options & get consistent no sound - sound and in both cases i am using THE SAME VLCRC PREFERENCE file .

OK - the problem PC that box said "faad,dmo,quicktime,dmo,quicktime"
so I conclude
1.that resetting preferences does NOT reset this box.
2. that finally I've found a difference between the VLC settings on the workign and on the problem PC.
3. we may be on the verge of solving the case !
I'm guessing that "faad" was in the box becase of earlier experiments, and that having "quicktime" in the box maybe the bug causer.
I don't know what having DMo in the box does or did
Anyway, rather than type in the suggested values, I have deleted everytihng in the box as per the setting on my working PC & will see how well it behaves going forward.
Can anyone shed any light
a) on what the DMO setting does and
b) on how those entires ever came to be there - I had never previously put anything into that preferred decoders field!

Thank goodness I found this timely thread as I had near-identical situation where m4a produced no audio. The problem must have started recently (some time after installing 1.01) but putting those extra codecs at the start of the preferences line seemed to do the trick. The command line option didn't work at all.
