Vlc caused a fault in user.exe on win 98

I installed lvc on a 250 GB hd but every time i run i get this fault at different times.
this time i was in the menu and it crashed with
Vlc caused a fault in user.exe

spec =
mini itx mb,
1GHz on board cpu
s3 graphics,
256MB ram,
onboard sound,
generic dvd player.
win 98.
