run vlc client at startup as service

Postby mrkptrs » 03 Jan 2005 15:52

I would like to have my vlc client started during startup of windows, as a service or in system tray.

I do'nt want it in my startup folder, because i would like it to be in de background, waiting for incoming network streams, instead of being in a window visible even when receiving no streams.

Can somebody help me?

I've been trying to use something like --ntservice-install, however I can't get it to work.

Or maybe somebody can provide me with a script / command that can open vlc in background waiting for incoming network streams?

Thanks!
Mark

Not sure what the answer is. The service command does exist, though is sparsely commented (use --longhelp --advanced).

A couple of the Windows developers are often on the IRC during about 4 am - 3 pm eastern standard time. Look for Gibalou or dionoea -- I know G. does a lot of the Windows work, and believe d. also does a fair amount.

i use serviceinstaller or files off of nt4 reskit.

ServiceInstaller from KC Multimedia (google it, free)

SRVANY.EXE and INSTSRV.EXE (free, MS) (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q152460/)

i haven't figured out the vlc as a service by it's own tools, so i just use that. i run it "underneith". if you are using terminal server you won't see it at all, but it will work. turn on logging and http/telnet. i'd also get kill.exe and tlist.exe off of the nt4 reskit to kill and restart it remotely from either a web page or another telnet/ssh session (use cygwin if you want)

on w2k server since the os runs background services in a pool, you get the most out of the processor(s) running it at a service.

it'd be damn nice if you could just do videolan.exe -service -install and then control it from the registry/services applet, but since i can't figure out changing the code to do it i just do it the hacked way with 3rd party apps.
