True, but you have to open the IFO file manually. In fact that’s what I do now. I open the primary IFO file and jump around (especially to chapter breaks) and can easily compare frames without VLC’s massive hassle. It is so much quicker now. Of course I still use VLC to watch videos since the viewing controls (normal seeking) are better than in MPC (even after I configured them to be about the same).

I already do, but they too must parse the entire VOB file.

'e' does nothing on linux

I could not find the frame by frame button also. On the hotkey settings there's no 'e', and the "very short jump length" is not exactly what I was looking for...

I work with animation and also need this feature badly. I use media player classic at work for frame by frame playback, but I don't want to use Windows at home.

*edit: doh, the feature is on 1.0.0, the version from the official Ubuntu repos is 0.9.9a. Will try to install the one from the PPA

The only workaround in VLC I found is to make the video play really slowly. Unfortunately the feature of going to a specific time, and control over the slider bar are quite coarse, so this can be frustrating to do, especially with the "Buff: 100%" aggravation (see viewtopic.php?f=14&t=62405&p=213699).

P.S. Did you realise that Windows Media Player has a frame-by-frame advance and back feature hidden under 'enhancements'? Microsoft does actually do some good things ;-P

It turns out the feature is in there. To access choose
View > Advanced Controls
from the menu.
