VLC Player cuts out 22 seconds of video

Postby kracor » 03 Jul 2009 08:10

I am using VLC Player 1.0.0-rc4 in Windows XP Professional w/ SP3. I have an AMD Processor x86 Family 15 Model 127 Stepping 1 AuthenticAMD ~2210 Mhz. My video card is an BFG PCI-E GeForce 9400GT w/ 512 MB DDR2 memory. Driver version for the video card is 6.14.11.8618.

I have used DVDShrink to create a movie-only copy of a DVD on my HDD. If I open VLC and play the video using the Open Disc option, the video plays wonderfully up to the 11minute, 35 second point. At that time the video jumps forward to the 11 minute, 57 second point, cutting out 22 seconds of video and audio. I wanted to be sure it wasn't the copy process creating the problem, so I opened the file directly on the dvd and the exact issue occurred while viewing directly from the DVD.

The DVD this is occurring on is the Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Rings Limited Edition 2-Disc Set. This is an interleaved DVD - containing both the Theatrical Version and the Extended Version with both versions having the first half of the movie on Side A and the second half on Side B.

Steps taken to reproduce this bug -
1. Open VLC and click on Media
2. Click on Open Disc
3. Navigate to the folder containing the DVD video files and click on OK
4. Click on the Play button
5. Allow the video to play to the 11:35 mark
6. Note that the video and audio skips to 11:57

Have tried to upload files to the ftp site, but unable to do it without timing out. I will attempt to cut down the video and post as soon as I am able.

I'd say your DVD has a scratch, damaging the part in between 11:35 & 11:57, that would explain why the error occurs both in the DVDShrink file and on the Disc.

If it weren't for the fact that the area in question plays perfectly fine in WinDVD, I might agree with you. There is another area that exhibits the same behavior less than four minutes later in the film. Haven't tried to play more than that because I was testing another issue that I think may be an issue with VLC player.

Strange. DVD Shrink does transcode and compress the DVD video files doesn't it? So normally the erratic behaviour should not occur with BOTH the file on disc and the DVD. Or DVD Shrink and VLC do have the same problems reading the DVD. (Just speculations)

I'm not compressing the file. What I'm attempting to do is split the interleaved versions into seperate files so that I can create streams for my home server in order to be able to run from any computer in the house without having to turn over the DVD. I'm lazy. :) DVDShrink does the transcoding and, as stated, plays perfectly fine in WinDVD. I have attempted to work with PGCEdit to fix some other issues, but my cognitive processes haven't yet reached the point where I understand what is going on with PGCEdit. In any event, this set of discs is the only issue I have with any of my DVD's. And I do appreciate the input. Danke!

P.S. I have been able to create an 82 MB file displaying the bug, but I cannot seem to get back to the ftp server to upload it. I'm getting a 'Page cannot be displayed' error. Will upload as soon as I am able.

Run it trough GSpot. If you get some red marks in the small frame graphic on the right side of the window, the file is probably slightly corrupted.
Use megaupload, rapidshare or something like that to upload the file, then share the link.
