invalid page fault in MSVCRT.DLL

Postby rdean » 16 Nov 2004 03:06

Just installed on a 98se box. Have installed on 98se, 2000, and XP before. First problem. Great program. Am at a loss. Re-installed. Downloaded from another site. Made sure everything is up to date. No luck. Any ideas?

VLC caused an invalid page fault in
module MSVCRT.DLL at 0167:780150b3.

This problem has been reported from time to time, but nobody cared to help us debug it (we do not manage to reproduce it ourselves...). It would be great if you could answer the following questions:

- First, please give the version of VLC.
- Delete the preferences file. Is it better?
- Does the bug appear at VLC start up, or later when you do a specific action (like opening the preferences, playing a file, etc...)
- If the problem appears at VLC start-up, try moving all the files from the "plugins" directory to anywhere else, and restart vlc. Is VLC still crashing? (Beware, since you will have no interface plugin, you will have to kill by hand the running vlc.exe task, with ctrl+alt+suppr).
- In case moving the plugins prevented the crash to happen, it would be great if you could identify the guilty one(s) (a way to do that is to add them back one after another, or by small chunks; you may want to start with the libwxwindows_plugin.dll or libskins2_plugin.dll, so that you will have an interface and it's not necessary to kill the VLC process everytime)

invalid page fault in MSVCRT.DLL

Postby rdean » 16 Nov 2004 17:29

I've installed on 70+ machines here at school. Prefer VLC over the commercial options. They cause to many distractions with our students. I try to educate our staff and students with options that are not heavily advertised.

Boxes are a mixture of Windows OS. Not a problem until I installed it on my daughters PC after reloading Win98se. Go figure. Clean install and all.

Not there now but I will try what you said. What I've done so far. Tried the 2 dl's from France and 1 from NL in .exe. When that failed I did the same with the zipped versions. Each time I uninstalled VLC, deleted directory, rebooted then performed the install. Always the same result. Click the icon to start VLC. It opens with an error message over top. soon as you click OK on the error message VLC closes. Entire error in previous post.

Do you have all MS updates/service packs for 98 installed?

m$ updates

Postby rdean » 16 Nov 2004 17:53

All updates installed. security patches, WMP, directx, IE6 even though it is not used. We use Fifefox. It is setup exactly like the pc's at school. Only the hardware and WIN98 license is different. Do not use M$ Office. Staroffice is used. All applications in use are up to date with patches. Games have not been loaded yet. Shockwave and Flash are up to date. Java is the latest build.

There's an MS article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=192123

(Don't worry that it doesn't list VLC -- MS isn't always up to date :)

You might want to try installing the libraries update that is referenced. It sounds like it might be the appropriate fix.

I get the same problem with 98SE. Launching VLC from the "VLC Media Player" shortcut usually, but not always, fails with:

VLC caused an invalid page fault in
module MSVCRT.DLL at 01a7:780150b3.

However, launching VLC from the "VLC Media PLayer (skins)" shortcut works OK.

This seems to be a problem with MSVCRT version 6.10.8293.0 which is what I have in windows\system. If I copy MSVCRT version 6.00.8337.0 (which comes with Sun Java) into my VLC directory and remove MSVCRT from KnownDlls in the registry (see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=151646) then it works fine.

Same problem here. I too am running Win98se.

VLC caused an invalid page fault in
module MSVCRT.DLL at 01a7:780150b3

I tried updating libraries using the patch at:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=192123

The error problem persists.

I remember a similar problem in games. In those cases it was the video or sound card driver, I think...
