Are you guys trying to take the piss here? Those skins look awful, they look like they were made by a feckin' five year. I'm not trying to be offensive, but those are the most unprofessional skins I've ever seen. I'd rather stick with the current one.

I really hope you guys can come up with something better than those cheap-lookin' skins, because it will make this great media player look like a bug-ridden piece of software that's only at it's first 0.1 release.

Seriously, I love this media player, but those skins...no way in hell will I choose between these skins. That would be like chosing which is the more intelligent, Paris or Nicole.

Ok, I am usually nice, but here you go too far.
What the fu ck is wrong with you? Did you try to make a skin before complaining?

Do you even understand what skins are before writing here?
Of course, seeing how you speak about "I'd rather stick with the current one.", it shows you have no idea.

The default skin for skins2 interface so far is:
http://images.videolan.org/vlc/screensh ... t-skin.jpg

The default interface is not a skin, and will not change.

Have a good day, away from here.

i think vlc should use the old skin from 0.9.9 because those 6 skins dont represent VLC Media Player

is the best option... to use old skin...

Is the chosen one going to be the standard one for the player? To be honest, I prefer the Qt skin over all.

Hmm, this thread didn't have too nice of a start. :| Well, Although me still prefers the default skin way more, CloudStalker thinks subX has a nice look to it. :)

I think subX looks good.
And the skin will be optional it's not going to be the standard interface.
The skin is chosen in Tools>Preferences>Interface>Skins and the vote is for which one that will be default.vlt so don't complain because you don't need to use it and you have to choose it to use it.
And you can use other skins found at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/skins.php if you prefer them.
I tried to explain what the vote is for, since not all seems to get it .

Also, there are some skins developers working on more Winamp-like skins for VLC. CloudStalker is not sure how far along this process is but nonetheless, there are other stylized skins in the works. Please keep in mind that everyone has their own style and what looks good to user A may not look so good to user B, there's no reason to offend users A and B for their difference in opinion though. 8)

Seems like the winner is SubX as i saw "New default skin: SubX" in git.
So is the vote over?

Nearly every complaint about skins since 0.9 is about the "Qt4 skin". We should put up a sticky topic in the skins forum, that has as title "QT4 IS NOT A SKIN, IT IS AN INTERFACE!"
People need to understand that there is a distinction between skins and the default interface. That default skin does not mean default interface. Their complaints are really annoying.

So are the complaints about complainers. lol. Kidding. :-)

Congratulations to the subX designer!... and Congratulations to aLtgLasS for having the seemingly preferred skin in a contest that he's not even a part of.

As often repeated these are skins, and are therefore customisable. Developing a good skin is hard work, since you need to have both the imagination and the understanding of user interaction. If you think you can make a better skin then make one, or if you going to criticize at least make it constructive. For an understanding of what skin is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin_(computing)

On the non-skin side there are people who are looking into some slick UI alternatives, but this is even more work and don't expect anything soon on this front. One such proposition is here:

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=58990

We are always looking for people interested in implementing new UI ideas, since even if the current UI works well there are always 'improved' ways of going about things.

I stick to the non-skin UI because it feels more polished. Its hard to say what makes it work better, but it does. Maybe it has something to do with the smoother edges, since I notice a number of skins don't seem to employ anti-aliasing? The other reason is I spent too much time try to work out which skin worked for me in the past with Winamp.

BTW if you want to put your own skin together, you could look at the ones for Winamp for inspiration, but be sure to ask the original author permission if you wish to adapt it to VLC:

http://www.winamp.com/skins
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

How do you use skin2? There doesn't seem to be an option for it in View --> Add interface --> ....

(i am using VLC 1.1.0)

It's in the preferences, the first dialogs that pops up when you open them directly displays the choice between the native and the skins interface. Choose it there and then restart VLC.

VLC/skin2 does not support "anti-aliasing" (alpha-blending). It hasn't changed since 2004, so today skins look another five years older than they already did in 2004.

in other words:
Those skins look awful, they look like they were made by a feckin' five year. I'm not trying to be offensive, but those are the most unprofessional skins I've ever seen.
VLC is a great media player and much more. It's "free", open source, it plays and streams everything, it's just great. But its interface is ugly on all platforms, and there's no way to skin it like other media players. That's why VLC does not rule. The interface. Users love interfaces.

Also VLC doesn't rule, because since 2004 (3-2-1-0?) you won't find that f*** preference to apply a skin. And if you found it in VLC's preferences hell, you wonder why that f*** skin doesn't show up, because nobody f*** tells you to f*** restart your media player. ;)

If you've got that one single file you can't run with your default or second or third media player, you go and get VLC for that single file. You read it on the internetz. VLC ftw!!! But as long as it looks and feels just plain ugly, VLC will never be your default media player. No skin will change that. Because, you know, VLC/skin2 doesn't support alpha-blending and doesn't drop these shadows. It doesn't fit on your desktop, it's made for those command line freaks.

Look at the "Orangeade" skin. It's such a creative skin. You don't have to like it, but it's the one and only creative, original skin in this contest. ...It just doesn't work.

Anti-aliasing is in the works: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=59268
I mainly use VLC for playing videos and these I do in fullscreen mode, so the looks of the interface don't really mater for me :D

Basically, even though aLtgLasS' skin wasn't part of the votes, many in this thread seem to say how much they prefer the default skin. It's aight I guess. :P
