VLC Firefox Plugin

Postby -Satoshi- » 20 Jun 2009 12:07

I have used VLC for quite awhile now and I don't think that when I watch a video or song using Firefox it is using VLC, Instead I think it is using Quicktime, Windows Media Player, and Adobe Flash Player.

I have read that you are suppose to have a Firefox folder in VLC's program files but I do not, also I did a FULL install.

I would appreciate some sort of tutorial to using VLC in Firefox because I truly am missing out.

It is a Mozilla folder under VLC install directory, not a Firefox.

There is no Mozilla folder in VLC's directory.

I remember installing the plugin too because I chose FULL install.

Type about:plugins to the Firefox Location Bar, press Enter. If you see VLC Multimedia Plug-in, you have installed it succesfully. Now go to Tools - Options - Applications and choose Use VLC Multimedia Plug-in (in Firefox) for the file types you want to play with the VLC Plug-in.

Thanks dude!

I have one question left, When I browse for VLC do I choose the Program VLC or the Plugin?
If the plugin where is that located?

If I figure it out myself, I will update this.

You don't have to browse for VLC: simply choose Use VLC Multimedia Plug-in (in Firefox).

But it is not always there.

I choose VLC for everything that had a cone next to it, but when I right click a video it says Adobe and when its MP3 it is using QuickTime.

Also, I thought after I made it use VLC instead of QuickTime I would be able to watch High Quality videos on Youtube, but It is skippy, but that is most likely because of my Graphics Card, but I thought it would have at least been smoother. (It does say Adobe when I right click the video I am watching on Youtube.)

Why don't you left-click?

When I go to a Youtube video it says Adobe Flash Player 10 instead of something about VLC.

I do left click, but there is not VLC Plugin listed there. So I browse for the VLC application.

Do I event need QuickTime and Adobe Flash Player? Maybe they are interfering?

If you want to watch YouTube videos with the VLC plug-in, you have to install the Greasemonkey extension to Firefox and this script: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/25318

I did what you said and it still says Adobe when I right click youtube videos.

I have Greasemonkey installed and I restarted Firefox.

To see what Plugin is playing them, when i right click on a Youtube video it says:

Settings...
About Adobe Flash Player 10...

If VLC is working then shouldn't it say something about VLC?

Sorry I said Quciktime in a couple of my posts, I mean Quicktime for MP3s not Youtube videos. Must be getting confusing for both me and you...

Do you see the VLC Multimedia Plug-in on the about:plugins page of Firefox?

How do I install the VLC on the page?
I downloaded vlc-0.9.4.tar.gz and extracted it, but I don't see an install file.

I would just like to say Thanks for all your help so far, I really appreciate it.

Ok, I uninstalled QuickTime and Adobe Flash Player (I dont know if I should have uninstalled Adobe, but I did and its easy to get back.) as well as reinstalled that version of VLC.

I was wondering, do I have to do something with Greasemonkey?

You mean putting the Variable PATH and the value "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC" I did that, but do I put "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" instead?
In the pic it says "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC".
