File is playing too fast

I have had these videos on my computer for almost two years and have never had a problem playing them in VLC. Just today, I played the video and it seems to be moving too quickly, as if it were stuck on the first level of fast forward. I can see and hear everything, but it is slightly too fast.

They are all .avi files. I tried installing VLC 0.9.9 to see if that would help, but there is no difference. I have not moved or altered the video files in any way.

Can anyone tell me what is going on and if there is a way to fix it?

**Also, there were subtitles in the film in certain scenes, and these have disappeared as well.
