Change Aspect Ratio of the Video to HDTV (16:9)

Postby Shakurazz » 14 Jun 2009 10:37

I was using the KMPlayer for some time, because it has a very useful option for me, i.e. 'Correct AR of Output Device --> 1.78 (16:9 HDTV)'. It rescales the video perfectly, so I can watch my movies on my TV, connected with the PC. I couldn't find this option in VLC, maybe someone could, in which case, please enlighten me :). Anyway, The KMPlayer has some audio issues, which I can't resolve, so my choice now is VLC, since it has most of the features, just lacks the mentioned one. Thank you, if my voice is heard :).

You have to use Crop and Aspect ratio options if you want to rescale videos.

Unfortunately these options don't do what I want them to. The crop function removes a part of a video - who would want that? As for the change aspect ratio function: let's say I have a 16:9 HDTV Rip of some TV show. On my 4:3 LCD monitor it is shown with these black strips above and below the video. And I want to watch it on my 16:9 TV with the correct resolution and without those black strips (I know that there is name for them, I don't remember it). Changing the resolution to 16:9 does nothing, since the video is already of that resolution. That's where the KMPlayer's function called 'Correct AR of Output Device' comes in handy. Please, make this function available and your player will be best out there.

You can try changing the aspect ratio to 4:3 to see if it helps. It will scale the video in your monitor so it matches it's aspect ratio, leaving no black bars, unless they are an actual part of the video file, in wich case, you'll have to crop then.

I THINK There's an option to set the aspect ratio of the monitor in vlc, but last I remember it was only available in the settings/preferences dialog (after selecting the show advanced options checkbox).
[edit: added I THINK ]

A Wiki search revealed that there's at least a command line option for this: http://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_command-line_help
( monitor-par )
