Can't play AVI or MOV

Postby Stephen Q » 03 Jul 2007 08:45

Hello,
Im running Fedora 7 with VLC 0.8.6c installed from the livna repo through yum.
However i can't play avi files. I have tested 3 different files, and get the following errors:

main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `DX50'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `CSCD'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `H264'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

This is interesting, as im pretty sure that vlc plays H264 and XVID. Not sure about the others.
Sound plays fine.

MOV is also an issue:

main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `avc1'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `mp4a'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Any ideas?

(also, i registered using stephen_wq but as of today it seems my isp is blocking any emails that use php mail(), as no activation or form emails come through. If you could kindly delete that account, that would be great.)

i'm having the exact same problem

running arch linux and installed via pacman

vlc -vvv --color --list |grep ffmpeg doesn't find the ffmpeg module :/

i tried deleting .vlc dir, reinstalling vlc with it's deps, reinstalling xine-lib... but didn't help

could it be conflicting with some other codecs or something ?

i googled and somebody mentioned xine-libs and i know that i have some xine related packages installed

hopefully some knows what's the problem :/

any help is appreciated cos i really hope i'll be able to continue using vlc

I have the same problem, and am unable to resolve it. Hardy Heron Beta on AMD64.

VLC is great,
Thanks, I've been looking for a solution to this problem that seems to have gotten a lot of victims, googling around a bit.

I couldn't play any type of video; just sound.

After reading this thread, I renamed ~/.vlc/ , which has the same effect as deleting it;
Then I reinstalled the vlc and ffmpeg packages with my package manager (I just happened to install Fedora 8 ).

Everything is working now like it used to do in Fedora 7, even the mozilla firefox plugin.
Unfortunately, I have to disagree slightly with the quoted gentleman: VLC is brilliant...

Settings garbled after VLC upgrade

Postby janpetel » 19 May 2008 20:39

Grmpf! :-(

I just got an automated update from my repository manager and the same problem appeared.

Same solution worked, but now I have to adjust my settings all over again (I have altered some settings to my better liking). Is there a way to avoid this altogether and is it indeed an upgrading problem?

I'm having a similar problem, but only the VLC Mozilla plugin is having problems. VLC will play MOV files, but they won't play in Firefox 3. WMV files play fine in Firefox with the plugin, but MOV files either sit with a black screen reading (no video) or suggest I download the Quicktime plugin depending on the site. I have no conflicting plugins (Totem and MPlayer plugins are not installed), but am running a 64 bit version of Ubuntu Hardy, and using a dual boot machine with a shared Windows XP/Ubuntu profile for Firefox 3.
Thanks for any help.

Hi, I'm still having the same problem.
I'm running PClinux (2.6.26.8.tex3), Installed VLC version VLC media player 0.9.9a Grishenko. I installed it from default source.
When try to play avi file I get error :
[00000383] avi stream warning: unknown chunk (not loaded)
[00000386] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `DX50'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

I re-installed vlc, ffmpeg after removing ~/,cache/vlc ~/local/share/vlc but still vlc is not showing ffmpeg module installed. I don't have ~/.vlc.

vlc -l -vvv | grep ffmpeg not list the module.

I'm big fan of VLC and I have it working in my Ubuntu but would like to get it working on my PcLinux as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW those avi files can be played at mplayer (kmplayer).
