Mac: Codec details cannot be viewed

For any audio I've tried, if I choose Window > Media Information > Codec Details > and then click triangle next to the stream, it expands to show relevant information only for an instant, then snaps shut.

I'm running VLC v/ 1.1.3 The Luggage (Intel 64bit) on a new MacBook Pro. I got the problem with *.mkv, but for instance *.avi works fine. I hope this information helps.

Do you guys know a workaround? I need to convert a file and file info in finder doesn`t do the trick. Where can I see advanced info like in gnome or windows?

Found a workaround. I Installed MediaInfo Mac.

Same problem here. Codec detail window shows no information for any video files. Hmmm, given how much time has elapsed since this thread originally came up, I'm guessing there is something system related that can cause this no matter the version of vlc.
