Re: Please Help!!!

First off, please consider a better subject line. Everyone in this forum is asking for help, so having this subject on all posts would render the subject line useless.

Now to what you are asking. Please could you provide some additional information:
- MacOS X version
- VLC version
- Mac model
- DVD you are trying to play and its region
- Does the DVD play anywhere else and do other DVDs play on your system?
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

MacOSx version 10.5.6 intell core duo and it's a desktop iMac
VLC version 0.9.9a (i think it's the latest)

I've tried with several DVDs alternating between 3 regions and it's all the same, I only get to hear the music but not see the movie... And all the DVDs play properly in any othe computer and regular dvd players...

Sorry if i was a bit desperate but i'm in film school and i need to watch tons of movies...

Thanks for updating the title.

What video output module is currently selected, in the preferences? Could you try OpenGL and see if it changes anything? If it doesn't could you see if the latest nightly changes anything: http://nightlies.videolan.org . Note: nightlies should be treated as pre-release software.

No problem for the title...

So... nothing happend with the OpenGL setting...
And tried the nightly change and it was worst, cause with it, i didn't even have the video window... With the version i had the vidio window opened but there simply was no video... but now it was just the sound, as if i only asked to play a song....

is there any other way...?
Do you think i'll ever get to play a movie in this computer...?

Have you installed anything on your OS that changes its behaviour. Haxies, for example? Could you attach what you see in VLC's message window?

Same problem for me, though not for dvd, but for all video files.

I've got the latest version of VLC and it used to work, but a couple of days ago it just suddenly stopped playing video.
I've updated flip4mac to the latest version.
and the video output in VLC is set to default.

The interesting thing is that, I still can make snapshots with VLC and play exactly the same files with quicktime.

Without having the machines in question in front of me, I am a little lost at what could be the issue. The best I can do is suggest some options and see if they make a difference:
- stop VLC, clear the preferences, restart VLC
- establish whether you have drivers that might be effecting video behaviour
- are there any external screens

this is so unreal...

i've done what you asked, and there is no change... i don't have any drivers that affect video behavior (at least i think so, how can i be sure??) and there are no external screens...

When i play the dvd i get a black screen and the sound, but if i take a snapshot i do see the correct image... as if it is actually playing!!

as i said from the beginning neither the apple dvd player nor VLC seem to work, i've tried like 10 other softwares and still nothing... but i just recently downloaded "ultimate dvd player" and that one WORKS!!! the only bad thing is that it quits every 10 minutes and i can't afford to buy it...

-So why any other works?
-Why in the messege window it sais "could not lock opengl provider"??

I'll have to see with my computer whether the message is normal, or whether it is an indication of anything. Does running as a different user change anything?

I have the same problem, but not all the time. Most avi's and mts files play okay. .mov files seem to be an issue. never seemed to be an issue in earlier versions. Anyhow, here are the specs from the quicktime inspector:

Video: Apple Intermediate Codec, 960 x 540, Millions
Audio 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz

quicktime 7.6 plays them just fine.

0.9.9a
macbook 2.2ghz core 2 duo, 4gb ram
osx 10.5.7

I am looking at an error and I get the following:

No Suitable Decoder Module
VLC Player does not support the audio or video format "icod"
Unfortunately, there is no way for you to fix this.

So what happens now?

No, you haven't the same problem, you have the 'icod' problem. No solution for this problem exist.

I was having a similar problem, at least similar enough to look for this post. Video was not playing, for videos that used to play. After reading this post, I checked the preferences and found that video was disabled. Checking the box fixed everything, and made me feel a bit dumb for not that such a setting existed. But it is not a setting I had ever seen, and I had never turned it off. Some videos would play with the checkbox unchecked, and others would not. Might I suggest that when video is disabled and a video is opened, especially when vlc is first launching, a dialog come up confirming that no video should play. Or if there is some situation where this setting is automatically turned off, it be automatically turned back on. Or choosing a video track in the video menu turn it on.

Actually, I now realize that I did turn it off by using it as a command line tool. Little did I realize that I would be changing permanent settings with command line switches. Still, it would be nice if explicitly choosing a video track in the video menu would either enable this setting or offer some explanation as to why it does not work. While this is a powerful and robust program, most people do not use it that way and there are a lot of settings that allow novice users like me to break things we do not understand. Anyway, excellent and once again functional program. Thanks for being my cardboard engineer.

I experience the same problem. I on a Mac PowerPC G4 (Digital Audio), with 1,2 Mb ram and 433 kHz processor, and I run Tiger (10.4.11). I just installed 0.9.9.a, and then I also tried 0.9.8a and 0.9.6. So far, I've tried playing some 20-ish MP4 files and a handful FLV files. I open VLC, and then I open the file via "Open" int he menue. I get a black box with no image, but with sound full sound. Snapshots also seem to work.

The console says this after opening VLC:

All the files I've tried so far (c.20-ish) perform the same way. They all play nicely in both iTunes and QT, but not VLC.

I've tried playing around with the preferences, but most of that is a bit beyond me, so no luck so far. Any help and pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Re: No video, only audio!

Hello.

I'm having a similar problem, I have audio but i don't have video in a TVStreaming (DVB - EyeTV Hybrid) with a Remote Control interface.

I'm using MAC OSX and I downgrade from VLC 1.0.2 to 0.9.2 (but I have the same problem in both).

To invoke VLC I'm using the command:
/Aplications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC --video-on-top --no-video-deco --intf=rc --rc-host=10.0.0.251:12345 --extraintf=telnet --width=800 --height=600 --video-x=50 --video-y=10

and after in another machine:
telnet 10.0.0.251 12345
add eyetv:// :eyetv-channel=1

If I manually open VLC -> File -> Capture Device etc etc... the VLC lauch EyeTV and I could see TV without any problem.

Anyone have any idea or could help me, please?

Thx
