VLC works fine for weeks, then gets buggy.

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

VLC works fine for weeks, then gets buggy.

Postby TheTrekhippy » 20 May 2009 06:40

I have had this problem with several of the VLC builds. I have always loved VLC for it's ability to play almost any file I have put through it, as well as it's .avi repair function. However, there is a flip side to that, which is I hate that generally there is always some bug or another that is pesky at best and at worst makes VLC completely non-functional. The recent build v0.9.9 is no exception. At first, it worked perfectly. The Play list order problem was fixed, and I was able to use it on my Extended Desktop Display. I used it for a couple weeks with no problems at all. Then, all of a sudden and for no apparent reason, VLC began to show bugs. At first it was just pesky play list problems, little things like when I moved a file in the play list up or down it would jump to the top and refuse to be placed lower. Now, I can't even view the play list at all. VLC crashes and I get a Runtime Error message about VLC asking something to close in an unexpected way and so forth... I am not enough of a computer expert to figure that out on my own. I have, in the past, been able to correct some of this bugginess by uninstalling then reinstalling either the current build, the most up to date build, or the previous build I could find that was working. This time, however, I actually tried three times to uninstall and reinstall v0.9.9 to no avail and ended up installing the new v1.0.0, which for now seems to have fixed the problems (Thank you VLC Team). Like I have said, I do love VLC, but I hate having this problem with almost every build and it's also very confusing. I run Eset Nod32 Anti virus/Anti spy ware at all times, with updates every two days and Spybots S&D on a every two days with updates, as well as PG2, also updated every two days. Generally, once I get my pc set up with all my favorite apps, I do not like to change anything. Once in a great while, and with great care to source and compatibility, I might get a new game and install it, but I know this last time I did not add or remove any apps or change my pc configuration at all. I do not understand what could happen that onl y VLC will do this, when other programs like Nero stay stable. I mean, it starts out fine, then gets buggy like that. I just don't understand. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. :?: :?

I think if you re-read my post you will see where I stated that I had uninstalled/reinstalled the app, during that process you have the option to delete the pref's and cache, which I am smart enough to have already done. I wish the solution were that simple. Also, I reboot when I do the uninstall and the reinstall.

Edit:: Today I couldn't play my SG1 .avi's with VLC because the AC3 audio was messed up. I couldn't hear voices, only background music. I installed the AC3 filter, no help there. I tried using the equalizer and other audio options, no help. Finally, I downloaded another media player. That worked. I'm so sad to say, after ten years of being an avid VLC fan, I can no longer recommend it. I hope the VLC team can work out all the bugs as well as this other player has.
