On Windows, do you play it with VLC?

Yes

It seems that Mac support is still secondary at best compared to the Windows releases. We'll just have to wait, I suppose.

That's really sad to hear...

VLC is such a great fully featured program. It's also the only one that really works well on a Mac. I think it's best that Mac support be increased to make sure VLC remains #1 on the Mac. Macs are becoming more and more popular these days, especially since they switched to Intel chips.

I'd hate to see VLC drop off the list for Mac users.

Well, sorry to be harsh to the Mac community, but the Mac users used to be implicated in the development and interested on what was going under the hood, a bit like most linux community.

Now, most of the posts around here and the questions and THE TONE used on mailing list and IRC are Windows-level ones. ("Fix this", "why ...?", not reading the doc...). Maybe this is because the fact that the Mac platform has more people, but the overall quality of the community has decreased to the point that there is noone developing anymore on Mac.

Now, Mac people complain like Windows users complain...
Well, sorry guys, this is open source community, complaining doesn't bring it back. Get involved or let the port die. If noone cares about development, then, so be it.

VLC 1.0.0-rc1 has been out for a week and noone came on IRC to report building on PPC...

I know you will flame me for that, but face the facts!

I have a PPC build, however, I am still trying to improve the h264 playback. I can upload it anyway to a location of your choice if you think this makes sense.

For the hard number crunching involved in CODECs how much needs to be adapted to the Mac, and how much simply depends on the sizes of certain data types? Would the development of OpenCL help resolve some of the inter-platform compatibilites?
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

My build was without nls.
I made a new configuration and started the build-process. Configure complained about a missing xproto and xcb - shouldnt X11 be disabled by default in an OSX build ?
Anyway, I got around this problem and post again when the build is done.

OK,
Build is done - I have a disk image.
however, no wonder nobody was able to report a sucessful build, because it will not work straightforward (I checked out the source tarball, not using git)
- the ffmpeg and x264 contribs do not work for making a build
- since this was not checked out with git, the Makefile stoppped because it could not find a git revision
- there were several files missing from extras/packages/macosx/
- the projects folder did not contain a "macosx" folder (? might be my fault, but I followed the instructions closely)
- the make vlc-release produced a not working application (no video window ?)

Finally I got a working application.
I made a dmg, If you PM me an upload location I will put it there.
However, I could only test the binary on my machine - if someone else could try it out too, that would be better, because of the problems which occured during the build.

nobody.loopback: If you see any issue in the build steps, I would suggest raising this in the VLC developer's mailing-list. I believe there are some non-active Mac VLC developers on there. If it documentation that needs fixing, or build files, then working with them would help everyone.

BTW Great job on getting it built.

Reading through this thread I noticed it drifted away from the initial h.264 playback issue a bit.

Just to chime in here:
I have a Mac Pro (8core @ 2.8Ghz) with 16GB Ram and a nVidia 8800GT and I am also experiencing the same h.264 playback issues: sounds continues, image freezes for 3-10 secs then it continues with a lot of artifacts on the video window and slowly 'cleans itself up' to become back to its normal quality.

This happened with a 1080p blu ray rip.

M.

meemorize,

When you look into the "messages" window of vlc while this happens,
what is the output ?
- late picture skipped ?
- unable to decode picture ?
- number of reference frames exceeds max (probably corrupt input) ?
