Http-interface: sending keyboard command through

Postby Katz » 10 May 2009 19:24

Hi,

Can Http-inerface be made able to simulate keyboard?

For example, I use vlc on my MacMini as a home theater and I use iPod Touch as my remove with VLC Remote as my remote since using the keyboard and mouse from couch isn't too comfortable.
The problem I am having, is that I mostly watch videos from my netbased digital recorder (I download the files first to my computer) and they are in .ts format and as such do not support VLC's JUMP commands. This means that only way to move around the videos is by using the slider and that is pretty darn inaccurate with Ipod or even with a mouse when sitting on a sofa. Trying to skip commercial breaks is a real hassle.

VLC Remote uses Http-interface and at least Remote's createors claim that Http Interface doesn't support sending through keyboard commands.

Now I know people are asking for the DVD handling through the HTTP-interface and I think this would take care of that too since you can controll at least most of the DVD-commands through keyboard.

Enough rambling from me on the matter that I unfortunatley don't know enough about.

I hope this was somehow understandable and easily implementable.

It could be. But it might be better to add just the feature you need/want directly to interface.

Problem is that I am not the developer for the VLC Remote. If i added those functions to the interface myself (and I haven't got the faintes idea how...) it still wouldn't help since I doubt VLC Remote team would bother doing changesinto their program based on 1 person having modded his Http-interface.

Their answer to my question was that the Http-interface doesn't support necessary function (JUMP/FASTER/SLOWER/KEYBOARD COMMANDS) and if they wanted to pass keyboard commands they would need to have a server running on the target computer and they are not willing to do that.

I can understand their position on not wanting to create server program for that.

I do not know why VLC's Http-interface couldn't be expanded to include more functionality. Of course there are probably plenty of reasons, lack of resources, technical problems what ever, but that is why I am asking for help here from you guys.

Anyways, is there any plans on adding atleast SLOWER/FASTER functions to the Http-interface? That would take care of my spesific problem atleast, even if it wouldn't help the DVD-handling.

Thanks for the fast answer,

Katz
