playing .midi files in linux

Postby FFGANDALF » 08 May 2009 04:15

according to the features page VLC can play .midi files in linux. When I try to do this I get an error message:

No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "MIDI". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

does anyone have any ideas to fix this?

You did not build the fluidsynth plugin, or you did not configure any wavetable for it in the Preferences.

I'm getting the same error message.
so how does one build the fluidsynth plugin? How do I know if I've already built it?

Where in Preferences do we configure the wavetable?

P.S. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. In VLC/Preferences/[Input/Codecs]/[Audio Codecs], I do not see FluidSynth, as the image on http://www.remlab.net/op/vlc-midi.shtml shows.

There you go, your build does not include FluidSynth. Game over for you.

You can build yourself, but it is a slow and intricate process. If you are not famililar with Unix software compilation, tough luck.

Better contact your VLC package maintainer.
