Just to tell you how I got along with VCL on my G5 2x2GHz:
Version 0.7.2 did not give me any sound on DVDs, all other video formats worked well. I checked the forum, tried "coreaudio-rev=1" with no effect but a general breakdown of sound on the computer until restart. So I did some more research and found the build
vlc-macosx-200406120324.dmg
Installed this, and again, trouble, trouble, trouble. Hardly any improvement, only dealt one flaw in for the other. Anyway, I keep researching and find a page with the most actual build for download which is at
http://xserve.via.ecp.fr/~videolan/macosx/
and to most recent (at this time) is
vlc-macosx-200408230305.dmg
Installed it. Guess what: Sound problems, but in addition, the "freetype" module was broken, and the menus on the DVD did NOT work! Got all kinds of super-weird error messages. Okay, so I dump this build and am almost ready to give up. But hey, just for the pleasure of wasting time in front of my computer, I re-install the older build (vlc-macosx-200406120324.dmg). I set the coreaudio module to "1", quit the app, open System Prefs, choose line-out, unplug my speaker set, plug it in again, quit System Prefs, start VCL app again. And now, here's the miraculous outcome:
It does play sound and image on all formats except DVD.
It plays image and starts to play sound after a short delay on DVDs with Region Code 2 (Europe and Japan).
It spits out ugly noises hardly recogniseable as the sound of DVDs with Region Code 1 (US), and this only after I manually choose "audio device 1" in the "sound" menu, which frequently crahes the app.
So here's my lowdown: I am okay with VCL now. My Superdrive is set to Region 1. So I can play DVDs with Region Code 1 with Apple's DVD Player Software, no problem. In order not to suffer from limited Region Code changes, I play my Region Code 2 DVDs with VCL.
Still, it'd be great to have a version of VCL that does everything, because Apple's DVD Player sucks for it's conformity with the stoooopid DVD industry's standards cash-in strategy. I have no clue of "coreaudio" whatsoever so unfortunately, I can not be of any help for the developers of VCL (who I highly respect for their efforts).
Anyway, there is another solution for those who can not get VCL to work. In the Mac OSX system prefs, choose "CDs and DVDs", and set the standard action when inserting a Video DVD to "None". The DVD will then simply mount as a volume, but no app will autostart to play it. Download MacTheRipper (comes with full documentation, super-easy to use) at
http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/mtr.html
and also check out the app DVD2OneX (linked to on this site). Remember that you are not allowed to make backup copys of DVDs you don't OWN!! Rip the DVD and reburn it with region code set to "0" or to "1234568" (seven is restricted, nobody uses it). And there, you just kicked the industry's ass! Your ripped and re-burnt DVDs will play endlessly on your Mac and every other DVD device, you can copy them to VHS video, and you will spend the rest of your life worrying about how you can do all this without breaking copyright laws (and tons of other things that can get you in jail).
