Graphic EQ and Preamp problem

Postby binarymax » 27 Apr 2009 09:09

I'm new here, but I've used VLC for a while now. I downloaded the the latest package for windows.

I still can't get it to remember equalizer or preamp settings. Whenever I start a new mp3 it forgets and I have to open extended settings and uncheck and re-check the Enable graphic equalizer. It does this whenever I drag/drop an mp3. It always forgets preamp and presets.

I'm just wondering if I'm missing something. I do love the quality despite the hassles.

In my VLC 0.9.9 drag and drop doesn't mess up the EQ. You downloaded the VLC from videolan.org?

Thanks for the response.

Ok. I will try to be more Specific. Here goes:

VLC is now closed. Not running.

I will now drag/drop an mp3 to the VLC icon on the desktop. It opens and plays the mp3. I click "Show Extended Settings" which opens the "Adjustments and Effects" window. I then enable Graphic Equalizer and I Adjust the Preset to "Techno" and set the "Preamp" to 9.7dB. It works Great! Sounds good. Now, I close VLC.

I then drag/drop the same mp3 to VLC and it sounds great. But, as soon as I click "Show Extended Settings" which opens the "Adjustments and Effects" window, it forgets the Preamp setting.

It remembers the "Techno" preset, but it forgets the "Preamp" setting.

Ok. I am now closing VLC.

I am dragging 5 mp3 songs to the VLC icon on the desktop. They play fine if I don't open extended settings. I then disable The Graphic Equalizer and close VLC.

VLC is closed. I am now opening the same 5 songs. They play fine. However, the Graphic Equalizer is still enabled. ? And the songs never play in the same order. ? I can't change the order.

It's strange. If there is any info I can give to help, please let me know.

winxppro. athlon64x2 5600+

edit: It remembers Preamp settings in a playlist(If I don't open extended settings). I changed the Preamp setting on song 2 and it crashed. I then tried to re-open the songs and it crashed again. I opened a new song and it worked fine. Now, it always has the EQ enabled even if I disable it and close/re-open. ? Strange..

Strange. VLC should forget all settings when you close it. You have one vlc.exe instance running in Task Manager after you close VLC?

BTW you have THE strangest way to open files in VLC :D

It doesn't, and I think I figured out the Equalizer thing. Try this:

Double click on the VLC icon on the desktop.

Open "Show extended Settings" Enable the Graphic Equalizer, and change the Preamp setting to a higher volume. Now, go to Tools>Preferences and click Save. Close VLC.

Equalizer will be enabled whenever you re-open VLC.

Drag an MP3 to the icon and it will play, and you will be able to hear the Preamp volume drop as soon as you open Extended Settings.

Set it to a different Preset like Pop, Rock, or Techno. Then change the Preamp setting to a higher volume. Then go to Tools>Preferences and Save. Close VLC.

Open it with an mp3. Do you hear the volume drop when you open Extended Settings?

I only hear volume change if I touch sliders or presets. Opening doesn't do it. (but it did in 0.9.8a)

Is this some kind of bad joke??? The vlc player is by far the best sounding one out there. Why the hell can't anyone figure out how to keep the EQ presets from going off every time you go to play something. If this can't be fixed does anyone know of a player that sound as good, winamp sure doesn't. Peace

I have version 1.0.2 and it still doesn't hold the eq preset, too bad for such a good sounding player, you would think this wouldn't be a problem  since ever other player I have used remembers its presets

You should be able to save them, if you keep the EQ open, then go to Preferences and press Save.

So after you have saved the settings, they aren't used on next startup? Or they don't show right in GUI?

You get any error messages to VLC log (Tools -> Messages... set Verbosity to 2) when you press Save?
