Make VLC as easy as Unreal Media Server

Postby tuaris » 24 Apr 2009 13:29

I'm a long time VLC user. I have been struggling for a for many years trying to stream media with VLC. Although I have gotten it to work, I run into many problems that makes the experience very unpleasant. The latest 0.9.x series has not improved that experience at all, in fact I have been unable to successfully stream with these versions.

Out of frustration I went looking for alternate solutions. I came across a Windows only product called "Unreal Media Server" (http://www.umediaserver.net/umediaserver/index.html). I liked because it worked with minimal effort. Unfortunately, it's not free, closed source, and it utilizes the Windows Media format. Additionally, the media can only be played using their player.

This is a feature request asking the developers to have a look at the Unreal Media Server, and try to incorporate it's ease of use into VLC. I want to be able to effortlessly stream from a live capture source without having to configure every detail about my hardware.

For now, I'm stuck using Unreal Media Server since it's the only useful solution I can find.

Just noticed this VLM thing on version 0.9.9, definitely a step in the right direction.
