Multiple synchronisations of local VLC's

Postby taapo » 29 Mar 2009 11:30

I'm searching for an "open" solution to play multiple files across several computers in a local network ... in sync. So I'm not trying to use a master -> slave "streaming" solution, but a master -> slave "syncing" solution. Each computer has a video file on his hard disk, and when I start the master computer, the other computers start to play "their" video file as well, in perfect sync. There are a couple of commercial solutions, but I'm wondering if this can be done with VLC in some way. As there is little documentation about the Wall filter in VLC, I was not able to find out if it would work my way, or only in a streaming way.

Could someone help me find out the answer?

Look at netsync module of VLC.

From reading the forums and the sparse documentation, I gather this is a "streaming" solution, not one that works with local files?

I, too, have been looking for just this feature. I have a few machines over the house that I would love to be able to synchronize audio playback between. I have my music stored on a NAS over a wired network, so all of the machines would have access to the same music, so streaming is unnecessary. I would just like the machines to synchronize the playback. I would also be nice if any of the machines could control the playback, so I wouldn't need to keep going back to one machine to change something, but it needs to be locked to one computer, that would be acceptable.

I also have a few reasons to want to do the same with video files. I used to see a network sync option in VLC's settings, but like taapo says that seemed to just be for streaming control, and it has disappeared from the GUI.
