(e.g. Firefox / IE because Adobe have no 64 bit flash plugin yet).
Dare I suggest gnash?

I suggest Adobe Flash.
Alphas 10.0.20+ has native 64bit support under linux, finally! I use it, it works nice.
There will come 64bit for windows soon (I think it's months, now).

We are talking 3 months.
Meanwhile 5 months are passed, VLC 1.0.0 is out. A great VLC version that's a fact, but sadly still no windows x64 version.

Still using FFDshow64 + MPCHC64: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=48155&p=154661#p154661 (or use a Linux 64bit distribution, they got vlc(&flash) in true 64bit for months!) Take the test if you're interested in Linux: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/

One reason, and the primary reason for many people, for creating, and using, 64-bit applications is improved security. For this reason alone VLC should have a 64-bit release. Performance is secondary, although many apps do run somewhat faster (it is very application dependent).

There are some 64 bits builds already done, but it seems they aren't exactly bug free and QT GUI cannot be compiled.

Cool, so their is some progress in VLC x64 windows build, but it's mainly a question of waiting for programs to create VLC (x86_64-w64-mingw32 compiler support in qt4) Can't wait to get a working version (1.1.0 that plays DVD-A :) ) with gui, so that i can finally uninstall x64 mediaplayerclassic :D

@QgpiRMIdsVUC, I think you experience big difference in conversion function of VLC, and in a faster response . Especially when you load big files or files with high bit-rates.

Hi sorry to butt in, im new here.

Just wanted to say i have been using VLC for a while now and its great as it plays everything you throw at it...so far anyway.
anyway im using Windows7 64bit and VLC didnt work properly at first until i right clicked on the .exe clicked properties and selected comaptability..then just selected Windows XP mode and ive had no issues with it since then. Maybe its the same for Vista (never used vista so i dont know). Ohh im using the 1.0.2 version :)

Hope this helps somebody.

And if 32 bit one crashes in your setup, I would guess 64 bit does the same.

I am running on a 64bit laptop running 64bit Win 7 and have NEVER EVER had any problems with VLC - haven't had to set it up to run in compatibility mode or anything which leads me to suspect a problem on the computer end and not VLC.

Just my experience - YMMV

Hi,

I have reading a lot this forum and a lot of my past questions are answered. so i will try to post my request here. I'm hoping to be in the right section but please feel free to point me to the right direction if not.

I used to run XP SP3 / Realtek on board sound card / VLC 1.1.0. Speaker Logitech Z 5500. There was no problem with playing all files.
The sound from MKV was decoded in 5.1. There was no problem.

I have re-installed everything. I chose Windows 7 - 64bits as an OS. Re-installed sound drivers and all that.. Re-instlaled VLC 1.1.0.
Now when i play avi files ( i'm sorry i just have the container name, and not the exact audio codec name here - i'm at work - But I'm talking about less compressed files which weights around 4 gB), VLC detects automatically the 6 channels, decodes the sound fine.
But when i play highly compressed MKV ( again - I'm not sure of the codec ). VLC doesn't pick up the 6 channels and only offers stereo on the 6 channels.

Now, this was not the case with XP 32bits. and the only difference in my settings is Windows 7 - 64bits.

Could this be a VLC related problems ?

Open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you open the MKV file, it will tell you more about that problematic MKV file.

Do you know where the 5.1 decoding could go wrong ?

Hi - and thanks for the quick reply ( again !!)

Ok - but what i don't understand - is why it was decoded in nearly perfect 5.1 when i had XP intalled. I really don't understand !

I'm talking about the same file!
