Video plays zoomed in

Postby flo_dan1 » 26 Mar 2009 23:26

I have just bought a new video camera, and when transfering mp4 videos to my PC, it defaults to quicktime. However it skips a little bit so I downloaded VLC which I have always heard works. However although the sound and video seem good quality, in sync and do no skip, the visual starts off looking as if it zoomed in, and just shows the top left of the video. This still happens when I change it to full screen and I am slightly stuck as what to do, I have gone onto preferences and tryed to play around with windows properties. video hight and width etc. and it doesnt seem to change anything, although to be honest I am just clicking around and dont really know what I am doing or what specific settings im looking for. Please help. Dan

What are the codec details for the MP4 file (in VLC "Tools >> Codec Information...", or use a tool such as MediaInfo).

Just to ensure that there is not preferences/cache issue delete VLC's preferences and cache files by going to "Start >> Run..." and entering %appdata%. Press OK and in that folder delete the "vlc" folder.

I deleted that folder, should i see a difference after that? And the codec details are as follows:

Stream 0
Codec: mp4v
Resolution: 320x240
Display resolution: 320x240
Frame rate: 29.970029

Stream 1
Codec: mp4a
Channels: 2
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
Bits per sample: 16
Bitrate: 1636 kb/s
However there has not been a problem with the sound as of yet.

Not necessarily - only if they were corrupted/had some odd settings.
And the codec details are as follows:

Stream 0
Codec: mp4v

Display resolution: 320x240
Frame rate: 29.970029

Stream 1

OK, looks as it if should playback fine. Do you have a sample you could upload?

Yeh absolutly if that will help. That is a whole other issue though, what do i need to do for that, what do you want me to upload? I could also take a screen of what the opening shot looks like on VLC when zoomed in and what it should look like when in full view, as it is on quicktime. You just let me know what you need

Well yes screenshots could be useful :).

As for uploading a file you can use a file hosting site such as Megaupload.com.

I have taken screen shots and uploaded them to photobucket. The one of quicktime shows how it should be, the one of VLC is a pretty pointless as it only shows the top left square, from 9pm till 12pm sort of section to try and explain it better.

Like i say this one is just a black sqaure as the video was taken at night, but you occasionally get a slight flicker of the left edge of the eiffal tower ( videos from a vacation in France) on the right side of the screen, but pretty much just black image and a slight close up of the window seen in the Quicktime picture. Megaupload was not too successful, I signed up but then have no idea how to upload. I apologise for my incompetence. I tried on youtube but the video worked fine and i realised that was not what you were after when requesting a sample.

You don't need to register on Megaupload - just press "Browse" and select the file you want to upload, enter some file description and press the "Send" button.

Ahhh ok, I've done that now, this is the video the stills were taken from. I hope it doesn't just work perfectly on your VLC player now!!

Seems to playback fine (320x240) on both VLC 0.9.8a (Debian sid and Win32 through Wine).

VLC 0.9.8a (Win32 via Wine):

What version of VLC do you have? Try VLC 0.9.8a if you don't already have that (ticking "Delete preferences and cache file" in the installer wizard):
