How to play fast-forward?

Hi everybody,

I see, that VLC player GUI has fast- and slow-forward buttons.
Could you tell me what API functions are used for that?

I only found standard playing functions like
'libvlc_media_list_player_play' and 'libvlc_playlist_play'

And - is there a possibility for backward-playing?
