24/96 audio support?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

24/96 audio support?

Postby a_liles » 09 Mar 2009 03:53

Ok I know VLC will play and show the proper information in the media information window for, "high definition audio formats" (that is anything above 16 bits per sample and 48Khz sample rate) but will VLC actually play the audio at those parameters if my audio device is setup for it or will VLC down sample everything?

VLC supports internally up to fl32 and 192kHz.

Most audio modules of VLC should support this, but some might need some work, depending on how weird your setup is :D

For example, our WavPack module does not support correctly anything above 16bits, but this is a quite rare situation.

I am running the latest version of VLC and OSX on a mac with the HAL Audio Unit module selected. I'm running everything through an M-Audio USB interface externally which the manufacturer claims will support up to 24/96. So in theory I should be able to play back audio with no down sampling as long as my hardware interface doesn't down sample it.

Yes, to the extend that the codec format is correctly decoded .
