Intel G.723 (42) Codec & .wav file

Postby qzwxec93 » 06 Mar 2009 00:29

I'm trying to play a wave file that works in Windows Media Player, but won't play in VLC. I never thought that I'd see the day that would happen...

The windows machine says the file is a wave file, encoded with the Intel G.723 (42) codec. I searched on Google, and learned that this codec is often used for VoIP systems, but could not find a way to download it. It doesn't play at all in VLC--it's not even recognized as a sound file.

Computer Information
Macbook Pro 2.6 GHz 2GB
OS X 10.5.6 / VLC 0.9.8 Grishenko (Intel) a684d02678

Topic #1 - The last post in this thread asked the same question, and didn't get an answer. Searching for G.723 on the forums yields 12 other posts
Topic #2 - This post references the codec, but is primarly about a similar codec that has been incoroprated in the nightly builds. I already have a version greater than 0.9.0

I'd appreciate any help with this issue.

Well, yeah, VLC doesn't seem to support this in wav.

Have you tried to use --demux ffmpeg?

I tried ffmpegx and mplayer, but none of those can play this file. It works fine on Windows Media player, and isn't DRM protected. For some reason, it won't play on any *nix based operating system. Are there any diagnostic commands I can run to verify the codec? I'm fairly certain that it is G.723, since that's what Windows identifies it as. None of the software on the Mac or my Ubuntu box will identify the codec.

Thanks!

As far as I know FFMPEG does not implement G.723.
