I'm a real rookie to this. My question is: If I'm watching a movie in VDL (VideoLan), and want to shut down the computer for 1/2 hr or so and come back to finish watching the movie, is there any way to watch it from where I left off & not have to watch what I've already watched?

No you cannot do that. However you can make a note of the time and enter that time when playing the video again by going to "Playback >> Go to Specific Time..." (Ctrl+T).
