Mini Core Solo - hardware limitations?

Hi,

I've got a Mac Mini 1.5 GHz Core Solo with 1.67 MHz RAM. I've recently started messing around with trying to run hi-res .avis with mixed results. Specifically, I'm getting the stutters that everyone is talking about. I'm only a neophyte with digital video (though with a decent technical background) and I just want to make sure before jumping into this deep pool that I'm not ultimately limited by my hardware. I understand that my Mini has an integrated video card and just may not be able to output to a 1080i monitor at full resolution.

Or is that erroneous? Is this a software issue and I may be able to go out and hunt down things like mplayer and experiment with them? Or tweak VideoLAN (which so far has been a real workhouse and very much appreciated)?

I'm using vlan 0.9.8. It runs the BBC Galapagos in hi-res beautifully but most of the other things I've experimented with have had the stutter.

Deactivate loopfilter and deactivate hurry up option in preferences, section ffmpeg.

Thanks for the suggestions. It did bring the audio in line, but didn't stop the pauses, unfortunately. Anything else?

I imply from your suggestion that you think my hardware should be capapble of running a vid of this resolution (7.92 gigs for a feature-length movie). Is that correct?

Yeah, HD in H264 needs a bit more power with VLC... Open source decoders are not that good, I am afraid...

You could also consider upgrading your Mini as long as you are not afraid of playing with hardware and potentially breaking something if you are not being very carefull and precise. The CPU is on a socket but you might have a hard time finding a CPU for that generation. I did it with my Mini Core Solo to a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo.
