Video and audio difficulties with Japanese DVDs

Postby kaitlyne » 09 Feb 2009 10:02

I've got something of an odd problem. I have always used VLC as my default video player, particularly for multi-region DVDs. I can watch American and British DVDs without any problems and the program works fantastically. The problem comes when I attempt to play a Japanese DVD. I don't think it's a region problem in the traditional sense because the video and audio attempts to work, but the sound is very choppy and the video tends to only half show up. For instance, the background of the menu options will be there, along with the underline showing which options are selected, but the text showing what the option is does not work. If I switch the region code, the video then works fine (and I can play it on anything, but then I have the same problem with American DVDs. It is only the Japanese region that is giving me any problems. I have no idea how to go about fixing a problem like this.

I am showing a video to my students later this week, and if there is a way to fix the problem before then that would be fantastic. I only have two more opportunities to change the region on the computer, and considering there usually isn't any problem, I'm not sure what's going on now. I'm using the newest release of VLC and Windows XP if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Possibly the easiest is to copy the VIDEO_TS folder to your disk and play that folder directly with VLC.
