MKA + E-AC3 not playing in VLC?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

MKA + E-AC3 not playing in VLC?

Postby Lotesdelere » 06 Feb 2009 08:51

I have problems with a MKA container audio file.
VLC 0.9.8a hangs forever when trying to play this file and its process must be killed.

The file can be downloaded from there as a RAR archive:
http://www.zshare.net/download/55179983eef7a1eb/

The archive contains a MKA file which itself contains 5 different audio streams:

Audio #1
Format : AC-3
Codec ID : A_AC3
Bit rate : 640 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Surround: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Title : AC3 5.1 @ 640 kbps

Audio #2
Format : E-AC-3
Codec ID : A_EAC3
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Title : E-AC3 5.1 @ 1662 kbps

Audio #3
Format : E-AC-3
Codec ID : A_EAC3
Channel(s) : 8 channels
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Title : E-AC3 7.1 @ 1662 kbps

Audio #4
Format : DTS
Codec ID : A_DTS
Bit rate : 1 536 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Surround: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Resolution : 24 bits
Title : DTS 5.1 @ 1536 kbps (48 KHz)

Audio #5
Format : DTS
Format profile : MA
Codec ID : A_DTS
Channel(s) : 8 channels
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Surround: L C C R, LFE
Sampling rate : 96.0 KHz
Resolution : 24 bits
Title : DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 (24 bit 96 KHz)

When demuxing the streams out of the MKA container VLC can play stream 1 and stream 4 with no problems. It doesn't recognize streams 2 and 3 but it does recognize the format of stream 5 as DTS even though it's not able to play it properly.

E-AC-3 raw files extracted from this MKA are not playing in VLC 1.0.0-git either. I got no error message, the slider and time counter are running as if everything is normal but no sound is heard at all.

All the other raw audio streams from this MKA are playing fine in VLC 1.0.0-git though.

All works fine, except the audio channel comes out of wrong speakers of E-AC3 5.1 (5.1 speakers)
And DTS track doesn't have audio speak all I hear is some music at the beginning

More infos about the E-AC-3 tracks in VLC 1.0.0-git:

I can hear them when I play them from the MKA file. However I don't hear any sound when the streams are extracted out of the MKA container. The 'normal' AC3 stream is playing fine though.

I've also noticed the wrong channel repartition of the E-AC-3 streams when they are played from the MKA file. I'm going to search for more multi channels test files.

I'll fill a complete bug report and open a ticket when I'll have enough informations.

But for now I'm just sharing my experiences so other people can post about the behaviour on their own PC's. I'm not saying that it's a bug yet but only how it behaves on my PC.

Well, E-AC3 support is new in VLC, and so is correct 7.1 layout...
Same for MLP or other weird configurations (like mka), so those are probably bugs...

I don't want to create a new thread for that but I have some DTS in WAV files which are playing fine in VLC 0.9.8a but not in 1.0.0-git. Here is a sample:
http://www.zshare.net/download/552431863aeb46e5/

I've also uploaded it on ftp://streams.videolan.org/incoming with this file name:
DTSinWAV-Plays-in-098a-but-not-in-100git.7z
