0.9.8a does not play video files (DIV3) / openSUSE 11.1

Postby esperantisto » 27 Jan 2009 11:30

I’ve downloaded vlc 0.9.8a and a bunch of other required RPMs from ftp://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/11.1/i586/ and installed them all in my system (openSUSE 11.1/Gnome). When I tried to open several video files, I got each time a warning, that vlc could not play this file in DIV3, and there is nothing that I can do about (soundtracks of the files, however, could be heard). I’ve tried to search this forum and Google, but still can’t understand, what is the problem (the same files were correctly reproduced by Kaffeine). Is some library missing (but I did not get any warning about dependencies, when installing), or is it a limitation of vlc? Will it be corrected in future versions?

To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

To fix this, please be sure to:

* Give your Operating System and VLC media player version
I’m terribly sorry, but did you read the very heading of my posting? Not to mention:
downloaded vlc 0.9.8a … and installed them all in my system (openSUSE 11.1/Gnome).

Yes, I did, this is just a generic message, but in your case the important part is:
Copy paste the messages VLC gives you when opening the messages dialog with verbosity set to 2

Just in case you do not know how to do that esperantisto you can set vlc verbosity to 2 by typing

Code: Select all

vlc --verbose 2

Or which I think is the same just do -vvv or to make things colorful!

Code: Select all

vlc --color -vvv
Once you run that from console before opening the file in question just skip a few lines. You can do that easily in most shells by just pressing " Ctrl-L ". That clears the screen and so when you open the file it is easier to tell what to copy and paste into the forums. Oh and though i am no expert here but

Code: Select all

vlc -l
lets you know what modules are installed. That might be helpful.

Anywho also more detailed info about you system version is nice just do a

Code: Select all

uname -a
A bad day with Linux is still better then a Good day with Windoz

OK, I have launched vlc as

Code: Select all

vlc --verbose 2
Here is what I get when opening a file:

Frankly, this all sounds Greek to me. I can only understand, VLC cannot play this file.

Luckily any VideoLAN dev is required to erad greek.

It looks like the avcodec module is not present.
So:
- check that libavcodec and its depedancies are correctly installed
- delete your plugins cache (~/.cache/vlc/) and try again
- does vlc -vvv --no-plugins-cache --list |grep avcodec produces any error or warnings and does it list the avcodec module

Thanks for the tips. I have libavcodec52 installed, and Yast2 does not issue any warning about dependencies.

The command that you have specified produces the following output:

Code: Select all

I have search by Yast2 for a provider of libavcodec_plugin.so, and it appears that this file is provided by vlc-noX that is installed in the system, and again I see no warning about dependencies. Searching for av_gcd in Yast2 gives nothing.

Removing ~/.cache/vlc does not help.

What else should I look for?

av_gcd() is in libavutil. So yt looks like a bug in libavcodec or libautil packages in Yast
