You can't do proper machine translation for subtitles. You can ask that from any subtitle-scene group. Poor subtitles steal focus from actual video because they are real annoyance with bad grammar.

And there are some limitations for double subtitle feature because of their specs. For example DVD subtitles, CC subtitles and --please stay polite--/SSA subtitle have certain position where they should be shown. That is why developing working algorithm that can combine multiple subtitles together and keeping combined out still readable isn't easy.

Things are easier with SRT/SUB subtitles because they don't have position info, so first subtitle could be placed to bottom of the video and second one to top of the video.

Machine translation should be a powerful addition to the visual information that the viewer is already watching. Even if the translation is poor, it will give a general idea of what is being communicated, and that combined with the visual contextual information will normally be enough to achieve comprehension.

Closed Captions/Subtitles should not obscure the TV Window picture.
That is the main reason Closed Captions are unpopular and the default mode should be to remove them from the picture to a separate window where they can be searched, copied and scrolled.

Yes, even though I don't think machine translation is good enough for use with subtitles I have to say it's gotten alot better over the years. I remember the good old "altavista babelfish" that I was using for several years for simple translation, it was barely usable. The new google translation is fantastic in comparison and can actually translate a full text between the big languages with a pretty ok result, with horrible grammar though. But as you guys wrote earlier in the thread, to get to use these newer technologies in a program like VLC without paying a truck load of money for it. does not seem likely I guess.

URL parser doesn't eat .SRT files, but you can use edit field to copy&paste your subtitle file there. .sub and .srt files seem to work, but SSA/ASS ones might get some issues.

This is usually the easiest option. If the class has multiple computers, you can also playback the same video on all computers.

I'd love to see this feature as well for language-learning purposes. I have a moderate knowledge to continental French (hence the need for English subs to fill in the gaps), but I need to learn to understand spoken Canadian French which is quite different (hence the need for French subs to make sure I'm hearing what I'm hearing).

Is there any other program out there that can do with, either with DVDs or separate sub' files?

Apparently there is no progress. You can use up to three subtitle tracks simultaneously in The KMPlayer. http://www.kmplayer.com/
Sadly it is Windows-only.
I hope VLC developers will eventually implement this feature.

Some DVD's have all subtitle tracks twice, one as primarily subtitle and the other as secondarily subtitle.
For example the movie Airplane! DVD. In VLC I didn't understand why every language were twice in the list of subtitles

But when I opened same DVD in PowerDVD, I had a choice between the primarily and the secondarily subtitle. One places under and the other on top.
So basically this is even a feature on some DVD's. But VLC can't use this functionality of some DVD's.

Nice to hear that you are working on this feature but I think the most common source for dual subtitles is DVD (or Blu-ray) although external files support is important too. PowerDVD is able to play two subtitle tracks together directly from DVD with no need for external files. Why should I search for files on the internet when I already own these on a disc? I suppose there is a technical reason because this is a not a common feature for a player but if PoweDVD can do it why should VLC cannot?

We are a group of four students and this extension is one of our engineering school projects. Due to the constraints we've got, the extension have to handle external subtitles files only. So, for now, I'm sorry to announce you that the extension won't handle internal subs.

People are confusing two different things in here. First option (and most likely the best one) is to add dual subtitle support for VLC. Second is to create dual subtitle files using AS S/SSA specs.

First option requires somewhat major changes to VLC (assuming that you can use different kind of subtitles with each other) but it is quite doable.

Second option doesn't require any changes to current media players (well they have to support AS S/SSA subtitles, but most of them do via external filters at least). But A SS/SSA doesn't support image based subtitles, so you cannot join e.g. two DVD subtitles to same file (well you can machine read them to text subtitles and do the joining).

Some mentioned Dual Subtitle is possible through FFDSHOW and DIRECTVOBSUB installed, but no one specifically mentioned how to configure them to work together properly. and since it is possible.....I had all installed: MPC-HC, FFDSHOW and DIRECTVOBSUB, but when I load another subtitle, it will replace that existing one, not showing both.

Also someone had also mention MPC with Storm codec http://www.walkernews.net/2007/11/17/ho ... orm-codec/ but I am inclined to avoid installation of multiple codec sets, unless really necessary, and I would also prefer MPC-HC over MPC.

Turn on FFDshow subtitle autoloading.

then use MPC to load subtitles and adjust their position. (disable internal MPC decoders if FFDshow icon doesn't pop up when you start playback)
