Ripping a DVD to AVI format

Postby rafeeq » 28 Dec 2008 01:32

Hi

I am trying to find DVD ripping software that is free and open source (for obvious reasons).

I have stumbled upon the fact that VLC is capable of this but all the "guides" are for older versions of VLC media player. I reinstalled vlc version 8.6 and this works to a certain extent but then what I find is that it actually streams the contents then records the content as opposed to converting the dvd files.

Is there any software that you guys recommend other than VLC? I have tried DVD Decrypter but that does not (it pauses after while).

Alternatively I would be very interested in contributing to the VLC open source project (not financially but programmatically). I have used C++ for a short time (4 months) and if there is a way I can contribute please send me a message. It is definately something I can put onto my CV. Secondly if I want a certain feature then if I am able to contribute so much the better!

Regards,
Rafeeq

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=dv ... q=dvd+ripp

The best answer to your question ;)

As for myself, I used (rarely rip nowadays) CloneDVD but that's a commercial product.

Try dvdfab, Free trial, but then you have to pay for it. But dvdfab decrypter is free.

Oh I see, I thought you had created that rule because of legal reasons or whatever.

No, just so I can trash people discussions about all those crappy converters full with adware/spyware without anyone complaining.

Aren't those posts created by spam bots? If so why not change the forum captcha or add an alternative anti-spam feature?

No, so far, they consist mostly of 1 post on the forum, made by underpaid chinese people...

Oh, I see... You can add an anti-spam feature where they must pronounce the letter "r", that'll be a big trouble for them :D

Edit: actually, it's not really a good idea because that would block the majority of Chinese :(
