VLC will not auto select 5.1 audio device in vista

Postby phantomftr » 06 Jan 2009 22:17

VLC will not automatically select 5.1 sound on my vista PC. I have a C-Media sound card with the CMI8788 sound chip and latest drivers. The settings are set to 5.1 speaker system in the windows sound control panel and in the sound card speaker settings yet VLC always selects stereo audio device by default. I have to go in a manually select 5.1 audio device every time. On my windows XP PC with an audigy 2 sound card it works properly. It has been like this since I first started using VLC version .8.6 and I'm currently using the latest version .9.8a.

You use Waveout or DirectSound output in VLC? And what does Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) say when you start playback?

It was set to default output type for audio. When I manually set it to direct x I have the problem. When I put it on waveout if then automatically selects 5.1. Guess there is a problem with direct x output then. Thanks I will just leave it on waveout since it sounds the same to me.

Heres the log when it is set to default output:

qt4 debug: Updating the stream status: 3
qt4 debug: New Event: type 1103
qt4 debug: Updating the stream status: 3
main debug: control type=1
main debug: End of audio preroll

main warning: output PTS is out of range (28928000), clearing out
main debug: audio output is starving (213688), playing silence
main debug: End of video preroll

Heres the log when it is set to waveout output:
