VLC offline in xubuntu

Postby ultrauber » 26 Nov 2008 16:36

I want to get VLC on my laptop to play DVDs, but the laptop doesn't get internet. Is there a way to, say, download an installer? I have no skills so the following are NOT options:

compiling binaries without exact instructions
using command line without exact instructions

I have an internet connected PC to download stuff.

Due to the way ubuntu works (and almost every linux distribution) works, you will find hard to install any software without connection to internet.
The easier and quicker way is to figure a way to connect the laptop to internet.

the very very long way is to go on http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/vlc, go at the bottom of the page click on your arch (i386 or amd64), select a mirror and download the .deb.
Now go back on http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/vlc and click on one of the dependancies (red dot) and download it. You also need to download the dependa
ncies of the dependancies (and so on)

When you got all the .deb, copy them over to the laptop and do as root : dpkg -i *.deb

I wish I could connect to the internet, but the laptop doesn't have ethernet. For that command, would you have to run it on every .deb, or just the first one?
That's a really slow site for me.

OK, I understand that it's almost unhuman to offline install the vlc on ubuntu, there are just too much dependancies
but yesterday a friend of mine showed me this link: http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Multimed ... 2608.shtml
can we do something with that package?
