MKV files not working anymore

Need some help!

Running vista 32. for months VLC has opened MKV video files perfectly, not it has stopped working- it won't open the video and VLC crashes when it tries. mp3 audio is fine.

i get vlc.exe has stopped working" when i try and open them

Worst of all I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling several time with no improvement.

Likewise I have deleted cahce and preferences with no effect.

What is the file I need to delete to reset this whole thing?

it doesn't work in XP either- completely different OS, install and completely different registry!

Hi,

Im facing the same problem with a few on the mkv files, these are the ones which are really small in size but high on quality, another file that is high in size as well as quality works fine.

It gives the same error everytime i try those files.

I'v even tried restoring the system to an earlier time when those files were playing just fine on the VLC player but that did not help as well.

Someone please help !

Got it, this is crazy....every mkv file in it's own folder....

Perhaps disabling the option
Preferences > Input / Codecs > Demuxers > Matroska > Preload Directory
will help to avoid such problems.
