Streaming video problem

Streaming video problem

I am trying to figure out why I can't view a stream accross a network. The guides I have found dont seem to address the errors i am getting. Here is what I am doing.

I have no firewall on my computers or my lan.
My lan is setup on 192.168.2.xxx
I have enabled streaming interface in the options.

Here is my .host file:

I open VLC...media...open capture device...select my usb cam...alt s for stream.click play localy...click http and put in the address of the host computer.
Then I profile and select windows (wmv/asf)...and click stream.

At this point my cam appears.

Then I go to tools...add interface...console...and I add web interface.
I then get this in the console:

Now I open VLC on my laptop which is connected wirelessly to my network. I go to play network...click http...and add the ip address of the host computer.
Of course it will not connect.

I suspect that I need to change the settings in the .host file to match my network settings, but I tried doing that as well and I get nothing. I apologize for the length of this post but I am a novice computer tech and I understand the value of giving all the information possible.

Any help anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

I do not fully understand your setup. It looks like you are trying to configure VLC using the integrated remote control, but you describe you want to stream accross your network. Indeed, the documentation is very limited. Is VLC running on your encoder PC?

Furthermore, if you want to setup streaming use the command-line instead. Much easier, and saves you a lot typing.
Follow the following steps:
1. Just try vlc -vvv dshow:// on windows and see if you see (and hear your webcam).
2. Setup your streaming. To assist you, please reply what you want. Then we can help you further. To me experience, the documentation is really outdated.
2. If you get everything running on windows, go to linux.

I am running VLC on both computers. I keep a "server" somputer in my office and I would like to be able to view my webcam from my laptop outside my office. However, the first step seems to be to view it from inside my network.

Also, while I do have linux on my laptop, I do not run it on my server computer, so switching to linux is not an option for me right now. But it seems to me that the operating system souldn't make a difference.

So if understand the setup correctly here it what I need to do:
Run VLC streaming from my webcam on the server PC. Then I need to run VLC on the laptop and point the "open network stream" dialog to my server PC. I just suspect I am missing a step somewhere.

Also If i start the streaming on my server and type

vlc - vvv dshow://

in cmd prompt on the laptop it opens VLC and gives no errors, the time counts up in the corner of VLC, but no picture or sound.

this should work as first step. If it doesn't then:
1. open vlc from command box.
2. press Ctrl-M. Now you see the messages box.
3. Close VLC (messages box closes automatically now).
4. Enter vlc - vvv dshow:// again. Now you see logging in the message box.

If still no success, first start vlc and press Ctrl-A. Select video/audio device manually, and try to get video in your screen!
