Streaming / Transcoding failed:VLC could not open the encode

Postby vtec2181 » 06 Nov 2008 18:08

I am a complete noob, sorry if my question is so basic

Trying to stream the desktop to a file

The first error shows up eight lines from the bottom. Any thoughts??

Thanks!

You don't have the adequate encoder/decoder.

I am new here as well, and have the same problem, i.e., vlc cannot open encoder. This is on vlc 0.9.4. However, when I installed an older version 0.8.6a, the stream works and convert/save works. So, please explain what I need in terms of encoder for 0.9.4 and where I would get it. I am using Vista. Thanks.

I'm using Fedora 9 and can confirm e268's comment. On 0.8.6a everything was working fine, on 0.9.5 I can't convert DVDs (have tested it with DVDs successful converted on 0.8.6a)
VLC stops with
*** glibc detected *** vlc: malloc(): memory corruption: 0xae732eb0 ***
Segmentation fault

This error folks in this thread have been getting is identical to the error I've been seeing.

Here's the forum post I created for my issue, which tracks closely: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=52591

Can the others here who have had similar trouble try mp4v or h264, and see what happens?

For what it's worth, I've had the same problem on win32 and osx vlc 0.9.6.

Perhaps the encoder is silently dying internally, but not spewing useful logs.

Reference this thread: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=53142

While I get this error with some files, others stream nicely. The only difference outlined in the above referenced post is XviD version in which the video was encoded with.

I have a similar issue to this too: I'm trying to rip my DVDs to .WMV or .MP4 - anything that'll let me transfer them onto a USB to watch on my netbook - but when I try to convert them, or stream them to a file, all I get is a windows message box saying that "VLC has encountered a problem and has to close" with the "send report" and Do not send report" buttons (VLC then shuts down), or I get an error message from VLC saying that VLC can't open the codec.

I'm using XP sp3 and VLC 0.9.6 and I've tried the preset settings for MP4, WMV and MPEG2 - all with no luck. So I'm wondering, am I asking VLC to do something that it can't (convert DVDs to another format - is it a copy protection issue?), is this a bug or have I got a dodgy copy (downloaded from videolan site, so not probable). Thanks in advance for any replies.

I, too, have XP SP3. I also have XP Codec Pack 2.0.6 installed. The older VLC versions work fine with this setup.

As for DVD copy protection, I would something like DVD Decrypter and then convert to eliminate that aspect of your issue.

Cheers for the info, especially for the DVD Decrypter. I'll give that a whirl.

I am also a noob to to VLC streaming and have been unsuccessful in saving the screen on Mac OS X (on a MacBook)as well.

I thought I was doing something wrong because when I choose the transcode options through the wizard for Mpeg2, I would notice a transcode failure warning in the messages output screen. Any file I try to save the screen to seems to end up with 0 bytes. This is all with the 0.9.6 version.

Should I try with an earlier version? I'm a bit worried that the 0.8 version may not work on OS X.
