vlc video freezes

i have the same issues as posted above. its usually present on mkv files (codec desnt matter): video freezes, while audio continues and after a few seconds video continues but heavily pixelated for a second or two. files are of a normal resolution no 720p or higher.

this i get in messages when none is selected in skip h.246 loop

seems like another AVcodec issue, are you by any change playing HD H.264 MKV files? If so, then

The problem is with all files I try and play. What ever the problem is the 9.x version of VLC is clearly to blame. I wouldn't mind but removing the software and loading the previous version does not help.

i cant confirm for the one time when the codec was divx 6 in mkv since i deleted teh file before i checked, but otherwise yeah. when the video freezes and i check the messages its always avcodec error. (and as said on standard no 720p or higher resolutions)

Well let's get back to the original problem. As I posted here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=52415 , this problem occurs with any 0.9.x version. I totally agree that VLC team should deep digger into this problem, since it apparently affects most Windows users.
You said that it is not reproducable but actually it is. All videos seem to freeze after about 2-6 minutes, probably depending on the hardware or something... It is quite random but still predictable within that range.

If you get the avcodec error messages, then the issue lies in libavcodec. Maybe another contrib update helps.

I'm not sure if this is precisely my problem (I'm using linux and this is the windows forum) but I have exactly the same video issue so posting here in case my info contributes to a solution in either o/s. An earlier poster described the symptoms perfectly

video freezes, audio continues, then after about 5-7 seconds video starts again heavily pixelated for a 2-3 secs before being fine

Using version 0.9.6 in 64 bit Fedora 10, my message log prints the following lines (repeated) when the video stops but the audio is still going

So, as stated above, probably a libavcodec issue, but how to fix? Problem never existed in version 0.8.x

If you build your VLC versions by yourself, try to use newer libavcodec when compiling VLC. Otherwise you have to just wait for newer builds.

I agree with Qsharp. This issue was introduced with VLC 0.9.x. I've never had a problem with any of the 0.8.x versions. I mainly play DVD files from my hard drive. I've tried and removed every 0.9 version as the video will freeze within 5 minutes for every movie that I've tried.

So I've had to back to the O.8 Version.

Lately, I've gone to using Nero Showtime as VLC doesn't work with the Interlink Bluetooth Remote and Nero does.

Yeah I have had the same problem with freezing when the videos starts and when you seek to a different part of the video it gets all pixelated and funny for a while then the video kicks in. I can understand why some people will think straight away that its a codec problem on my pc or something but this all happened when upgrading to 0.9.8a. As soon as I downgraded to 0.8.6i-win32 everything was back to perfect the way it has always been. I also found it fustrating that when you go to the temp folder in emule to preview the files that I'm downloading, that the next time i start vlc it won't remember that folder from last time so I have to click my way to that temp folder in emule every time which isnt what you had to do in the 0.8x versions. Everytime you clicked "file" then "quick open file" it went straight to that folder.Also the skins don't apply untill you restart vlc or wont apply at all unless you go to preferences and pick it there rather than right clicking anywhere and going to skins. Also when you click on a video on your hard drive vlc will start up but won't start playing the video, you have to click play. I thought maybe it's just something I have to change in the settings but I could't see anything there. And one more thing it also won't exit the program properly, so i have to go control alt delete and end prosess. Having said that I always thought the 0.8x versions where really basic looking and think the new version with the skins will be really awesome when all the bugs are fix. So I'll be checking back soon for the new updates, mean while i'll keep using the basic looking one

VLC only uses build-in codecs, so if you see issue in video playback with VLC, it is usually VLC related. And there isn't option to set or remember location when using Media -> Open File..., Media -> Advanced Open File... should remember location.

I have the same problem with VLC 64 bit on Vista 64, when playing AVI files. It's not predictable, so just like the posters above, I can't define the steps to reproduce it. Sometimes it freezes after 5 minutes, sometimes after 1-2 hours, sometimes not at all. I can switch from VLC to other windows a few times, then Windows becomes unresponsive and ignores the shutdown/restart command, so I'll have to make a hard reset. I'm using an ATi 4850 card with Catalyst 8.11 BTW (8.12 is too shaky).

I've experienced the same problem with MPlayer Portable from portableapps.com, so I suspect some codec, if VLC and MPlayer have any codec in common.

I would just like to add myself to the list. I have the freezing issue about 1/3rd into a normal TV episode file and again sometimes towards the end of the file.

It does not always happen, but often it does. The video freezes and the audio continues. I let VLC go on like that for maybe 7-8 seconds without doing anything to it, and then it fixes itself.

I'm using VLC 0.9.8a on Vista 64, Core Duo 6850, 4GB memory.

There is no topic in the ffmpeg.org mailing list about this. Neither does googling "libavcodec xvid freezes" (or similar queries) result in anything that seems to be related to this problem. Therefore I'm inclined to think that this problem will not be solved soon.
@VLC_help: on what do base your conclusion that libavcodec should be updated for this problem to be solved? And could you tell me what I can do to speed up the process (e.g. posting on the ffmpeg.org mailing list)?
