Weird problem

Postby Sveos » 23 Feb 2008 14:32

I have a really weird problem that I just can't seem to solve. I use the latest version of VLC Player and it works just fine on my desktop, playing all sorts of files with no problem. However, when I play the exact same files - (mostly .IMG / :ISO) - on my laptop, VLC behaves really weird.

First of all it plays in high speed all the way to the menu, and once at the menu, I can't click anything at all. The files do play, but I can't use the menus at all. I can't select languages, can't access chapter selection and so on. I can pick a subtitle track or a language track by right-clicking, but VLC won't inform me which is which, forcing me to go through up tp 23 tracks before finding the right one.

I have the same versions installed on both computers, and the both have XP Pro, SP2 installed. I have reinstalled several times, but it just won't function properly. The player does, however, play .AVI and DVDs without problem.

Please help.

I was having a similar problem, but think I've figured it out and maybe this will help you as well.

If I try to play the stuff by opening them as "Files" I have the problem exactly as you're describing it. So instead, when I want to play the files, I selected "Disc" and then set the radio button to VIDEO_TS directory. Once done, I Browsed for the directory containing the files. And now I can click on all on-screen options like Episode Selects, Special Features, Audio Set-up, etc.

Thanks, but when I play discs there's not much of a problem. Only when I try to play IMG and ISO files.

Right, I understand that the problem you're having is from playing files on your computer and not discs in your DVD drive. And that's what I'm referring to in my suggestion. You go to the Disc dialogue (even thought it's a file and not a disc that you're trying to play) and select VIDEO_TS Directory. This will let you browse your system for the FILE that resides on your hard drive (not a DVD/disc). Basically you are using the Disc option to play a File that has been ripped/copied from a Disc. And so VLC wants to play it like a disc rather than a file.

Hope that makes sense.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I follow. First of all, where is this "radio button" and second, do I need to create a Video_TS directory, because there aren't any anywhere since my files on my HDD aren't mounted or anything like that?

You mean I should open them using Ctrl.-I? "Open disc" ( I have the Swedish version).

Hmmm, well we may be talking two different things then, but let me give you some more details just in case this will resolve your problem...

First, I'm on a Mac and I'm assuming you're on a PC. However, when you do Ctrl-l, does a menu pop up with options? If so, is there an option for VIDEO_TS Directory? If so, select that and then Browse to the file you're trying to play.

If Ctrl-l does not bring up a menu, is there a way to access VLC menus and options without using these shortcut keys? See if that method will lead you to a File -> Open Disc option with more selections.

When I open VLC, I have a menu with choices, and one of those choices is File. So, I make these selections: File -> Open Disc... -> an Open Source box comes up and here is where I have a set of radio buttons. The default appears to be DVD, but I select VIDEO_TS Directory instead and then Browse for the file I want to play.

Ok, seems it's a little different on the Mac, then. Thanks for trying, though.

Hi, I'm well aware that this thread is 9 months old, but I'm experiencing exactly the same problem that sveos already described, and I think it is better ask here instead of opening a new thread. When you try to open a .img file (CloneCD image) directly with VLC it is not possible to select anything in the (DVD) menu. The solution is to mount the .img first with some virtual CD/DVD drive, and then open the VIDEO_TS folder as (I think) testdog65 suggested. However, I do not like to have so many programs installed, and I would prefer to open .img files directly. Did anyone find already a solution and/or cause of this behavior?
BTW, my VLC version: 0.9.6, windows XP sp3.

Just for your information, I haven't found one yet.
