file association

Postby cherrysunfloewr » 19 Nov 2008 07:58

First of all, thank you guys for the great product and support. I am new to your player and was wondering how to set vlc as the default player. I have tried Tools>preferences> and checked all the files on the list, but vlc won't remember the selection. It also won't retain the enque option I have checked in the same section. I have tried uninstall/reinstall deleting prefs and cache. Suggestions? Windows XP SP3 vlc 9.6

Thanks for your reply. Yes I did. A few times. However, when I finished posting, the associations had taken. I don't know. The only thing I did was register and post here. I still can't get the "enqueue files in playlist when in one instance mode" to stay checked. When I try to open multiple files, it wants to open each file in a player. If I select and drag files to the player, they are placed in the playlist in random order. Any ideas?

IIRC enqueue files in playlist when in one instance mode is broken because of design choice (something to do with saving the option). And random can be avoided if you start VLC with --no-random

broken... ah ok that explains that.
i still can't figure out how to use the library/playlist and the docs appear to be "lacking" any suggestions? the items play in the correct order. i'm just not sure how to get them to the playlist. when multiple files to the list or select the "play selection" from windows explorer the items are placed in random order on the playlist. i then have to drag them back to the correct order which is quite challenging as well, as the items don't seem to drop where expected...

You have to edit the menu entries using registry editor and add --no-random to them.

Well, I am not good with this regedit thing. Exactly where in the reg would I find these playlist entries, and what syntax would I use to add the no random function to both the playlists and the vlc.exe itself?

--started-from-file look up that string. You should find entries for all different file types.

I'm sorry it took me so long to get back here. I meant to say that I needed to have you type out the exact syntax needed in the registry to add the file associations for all vlc playlist extensions and the no random function to VLC when started from the playlist file. However, this problem appears to have been fixed in VLC 0.9.9 and the new v1.0.0 that I am now testing. Thank you to the VLC team.
