0.9.x crashes on exit

Postby qsharp » 06 Nov 2008 17:29

hi, i've been using 0.8.6x for ages now and never encountered any problems. but about a week ago i checked videolan.org and noticed that 0.9.4 was out, so in downloaded and installed it, with uninstalling the old version of course - no probs yet. but the video sometimes freezes but the sound still continues to run. fast forward and rewind won't solve the problem. so i have to restart vlc which then results in a crash, which resets all my settings. that appeared very suspicious to me and i also tried 0.9.2 but same thing there. i wonder why noone else seems to have that problem.

Hi! my 0.9.4 crashes on exit after video capture mode. I have no problem with playing. But I can not save any captured file. I tryed some codecs, but sometime I have no video, sometime have nothing (empty file), sometime VLC crashes on capture begin.
0.8.6 works perfect.

noone can come up with an explanation?

edit: now i'm using 0.9.6 and am still encountering the same problem except the crashing part. opening a standard *.avi file will cause the image to freeze after 7~8min.

You tried WMV/ASF+WMA2+MP3 as transcoding option?

Sorry, that was meant for Ivus.

For you, could you open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) and then start playback and when issues come up, paste errors/warnings here?

This is what happens as soon as the image freezes:

main error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap
main error: decoder is lmain error: decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap

first line keeps prompting indefinitely and the second one appears every 200-300 lines.

This happens with all the files you play or with specific ones?

I usually play DiVX/XviD files of 350mb or bigger and it tends to stop randomly after 4-7 minutes. Small videos of about 5min don't cause any problems. Weird thing is that 0.8.6x had no problems with playback regardless of the codec. Windows Media Player works fine, too.

There were huge libavcodec related changes between 0.8.6 -> 0.9.x, that is why certain people have problem with video files (specially DivX and Xvid).

Well, does that mean that you cannot come up with a solution to it yet? WMP uses the same codecs, why doesn't it freeze?

VLC uses build-in codecs. I can't use DirectShow or VfW codecs (so VLC and WMP use different decoders). Issue is VLC only.
